another way of sealing autoclave bags?
    #971675 - 10/18/02 05:55 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

i just spent around ?240 buying mushroom equipment (i got EVERYTHING including some items i will use in the future) to start off my mushroom cultivation again.

i'm planning on using autoclavable bags and a lot of the teks recommend using an impulse sealer to seal them. is there an alternative to this? impulse sealers are quite expensive and maybe in the future i will buy one...but i have an idea and would like your opinion about it...

i have a flat surface hob in the kitchen, i bought some oven bags (which can withstand heat up to 300C). They're a bit like mylar bags. But i did an experiment before i receive my autoclavable bags...i took a large wooden spoon (kinda looks like this ----------------o HEHEHE) folded the plastic over the wooden spoon handle, turned the hob on the lowest setting and then touched the plastic with the hob..

------------- plastic
---------------------------o spoon handle
------------- hob surface

that's my diagram hehe

it did seal it but just wondering, would this work with the autoclavable bags?

cheers everyone for all your help!

If you're careful, an iron works perfectly. Don't try and slide the iron across the opening though. The way to do it is to press straight down, pick the iron back up, and work your way across the opening.

plug an iron in an let it heat up fully. close the top of the autoclave bag and lay it down flat on some newspaper. make sure the bag is folded into itself neatly but do no fold over the top. get a sheet of paper and fold it over. sandwich the bag between the folded piece of paper (so the bag has paper on both sides at the top). the bag should be about 2inches inside the paper. now iron the paper making sure to keep the iron away from the exposed bag. iron for about 2 mins and let it cool. the paper can now be torn away. it should have sealed about a 1 inch strip at the top of the bag and paper will still be stuck to it.
