Autoclavable Bags
    #334120 -

I just received my autoclavable bags and was wondering what anyone here does to close the end of the bag before pressure cooking. I figured i would fold it a few times and hold it with a paperclip. Is it ok for the bottom of the bag to be slightly submerged ( like an inch)?

Thankyou for your help

Hi LizardKing,
Autoclavable bags are usually sealed with an impulse sealer. Whats an impulse sealer? Its basically just a machine that gets really hot and melts the plastic. Here's a picture and some info on them....

Using an impulse sealer is the best way to seal your bags. If you're stuck you might be able to use an old iron. But that could get messy?

You might also be able to fold it, then maybe seal it off with tape but thats a tough one too??

Well, I hope that gives you an idea:)

Thankyou Lana,
I was considering using a lighter as i dont have the machine you are refering to. But all i wanted to do was sterilize my 50/50+ substrate and use it after it cools in the fridge. So i just rolled it up and paper clipped it.
Thanx again.........

YOu could tie it up with string..... it would be tighter then with tape or paper clips.

if you want it to be air/water tight...either use a lighter and directly seal it with the flame, or use a lighter to heat up some pliers and clamp them down on the plastic to heat it up and bond it together.

I just use the back side of a heated butter knife and drag it across the plastic near the top, but only after sterilization, I would be cautious of the bag exploding from steam pressure while in the PC.  I would just use a trash bag tie to keep the bag closed while in the PC then seal it after I took it out.
