ID please - Hygrocybe?

I found this recently, I think it might be a hygrocybe, but the cap looks too brown from the pics and descriptions I've looked at. It was growing on grass in a group of three, the caps were all touching, but not the stems. Birch trees were nearby. It has a white spore print, yellow gills, it bruises yellow when cut in half, white flesh and faily firm. Any ideas?

Looks like a Trichloma, maybe T. flavobrunneum. I used Bessette's M of NNA to key. T. flavobrunneum often found with birch. Description matches your mushroom. I usually find Trichs when the weather gets colder. They are usually more robust than the waxy caps.

Thanks falcon, I'm new to identifying mushrooms, are there any websites that you know of that have good keys, I've used mainly books so far. I find it pretty amazing that I haven't found any really good keys on the internet yet, especially for the UK (where I'm from!). Maybe the shroomery should start an identification key, there must be loads of photos on the server and the folks here are really knowledgable. Lets make a good name for recreational drug users! I've leant much more from everyone here than the normal mycological sites

i would concur with falcon on the tricholoma id.
i dont generally key things out when i sit here in the library, it's all from my head, so species is not happening.
i go to dogpile and search for keys online quite frequently.
often keys are formulated with all known species, especially if you are using a key designed for a specific genus.  try searching for a particular genus with the word "
"key" and the word "identification."
you might be surprised at how many you can find, depending on the genus.

i meant to say that by "all known species" a good thorough key would include most common worldwide species, as species are often found in habitats outside their previously delineated range.

I use keys in books. But if I'm looking for something I haven't seen before I go to
Mykoweb
and browse. Not a key, but good pictures and descriptions in California fungi. There is also a good UK site bioimages.org.uk .
Not a key either. For intenet keys as viscid said search using key and the genus you're looking for.

Good ID, guys. I concur with Tricholoma flavobrunneum. I don't have specific information on the edibility of this species, but the very similar T. pessundatum is poisonous, so you should probably treat these as poisonous too.
