Which is totally why they've been a primary staple of every single civilization since the dawn of agriculture...

And have they been healthy? They've lived, but they haven't been in the kind of shape I'd admire.

Also, yea smoothies and olive oil are expensive...

Frozen and fresh fruit mashed up in a blender with some milk or a dash of fruit juice isn't healthy?  Olive oil isn't healthy?  Whatever....  I guess that's why people who live in the Mediterranean Sea area have some of the highest life expectancies in the world.

But, I wanna eat sushi every day!  :crymeariver:

I know I can live off of beans and rice.  But, if one is to follow the food pyramid and get lots of fresh veggies and fruits and fish...it's just plain expensive.  End of story.  It also doesn't help that I have an insanely fast metabolism and I eat more than men who are twice my size.

You're probably buy trendy, hipster food that is billed as being 'healthy' but has never been shown to be healthier (ie organic).

Nope.  I buy fruits and vegetables from a normal grocery store (non-yuppy store).

How much will five servings of veggies and four servings of fruits per day cost you compared to a microwave pizza per day?  There's no comparison.  It is cheaper to eat crap.  Maybe in California and Arizona where the produce doesn't have to be shipped far but I live on the east coast where our produce sections blow and are expensive.

Maybe you just haven't learned how to shop efficiently.

For veggies:  A bag of frozen peas, a bag of baby spinach, a head of broccoli, five apples and five bananas = maybe 12 bucks, will supply your vegetable needs for a week.  That's about $50/month, for all the plant material you need.  Add more if desired.

A bottle of olive oil (ten bucks) will last a long time unless you are using too much. Use Canola oil for frying purposes, it's way cheaper.

Chicken is expensive, I eat it maybe twice a week.  Frozen chicken breasts are $24 for ten.  Even more economical is one of those eight-dollar rotisserie chickens from the deli section.  You can get four or five meals out of it if you make chicken salad sandwiches.  Top-notch tuna is two bucks a can.  Tofu is about two bucks a pound, can be worked into any recipe.  Extra-large eggs can be had for two-something for a dozen, that's about twenty cents each.  Nothing really wrong with lean ground beef once in a while too.  I buy frozen pollock fillets, two pounds for eight bucks.

Whole wheat pasta, quinoa, or bulghur are all about fifty cents per meal's worth.  Brown rice is even less.  Bread is cheap too.

If those items bore you, add some herbs and spices, all dirt cheap at bulk stores.

I don't know, even if it ends up being a bit more expensive, you are improving your longevity and your acute physical state.  Shitty food sucks the life out of a person, I wouldn't eat it if it were free.

I live where all the produce is imported in the winter, I doubt it's any more here than the east coast.  And I can absolutely live on $200 a month for healthy food.  I recently upped my budget from $160/month

I think I'm talking to someone who's already made up his mind though.

Thanks for the info.  It probably is possible to do it all for just several hundred a month.

It just sucks that I need to eat so much.  Being a skinny little guy who needs to eat tons of food is really fucking expensive.

Most non-organic fruits and veggies are cheap.  Stay away from the more expensive items like pineapples, berries, and out of season imported items.

Bulk grains can be bought for super-cheap.

Tofu is cheap.

Eggs/egg whites are cheap (relative to the amount of protein in them).

Dried beans/legumes are a super cheap protein source as well.

Meat of any quality is generally expensive.  Also organic prepared foods will tend to be expensive.  Fad items will also be expensive (pomegranate juice, for example).

I agree that healthier foods are more expensive for the same amount of calories, but if you shop smart, you can still manage it on a budget.  Fruits and vegetables are fairly cheap.  The only thing I find expensive is meat.  All I do is wait for chicken to go on sale and then I buy a few hundred dollars worth, bag it and freeze it all.  I eat for about $5 dollars a day and it consists of all good foods.

A pound of apples is like 1.69.  I think thats pretty cheap.  Wheat pasta is abut a buck for a giant box.  A pound of meat/chicken 5/6$ a pound.

I think thats all pretty cheap.

You want expensive, try fucking cereal.

Also, all the "organic" stuff is a rip-off.  In the end, it comes down to supply and demand.
