Why is healthy food so expensive?
    #9676006 -

I put this in the anonymous forum so that we could have some completely honest and unabashed answers.

If I eat five servings of vegetables a day, 4 servings of fruit a day, lean meat like chicken and fish, and healthy whole grains then my grocery bill would be at least $800 a month.  If I eat garbage like microwavee pizzas, french fries, and cheap cookies then my grocery bill would be $200 a month.

What the fuck gives?  This is no fair.  I wish I could eat fruits and veggies and fish all day long but I can't afford it.

Yeah, the Whole Foods experience is funny.  All of the customers appear to be stuck up yuppie moms and middle-aged professionals yet the workers are all starving hippies/hipsters/punks.

I'll just have to eat crap, get fat, and die twenty years early.  I guess I'm not special enough to be healthy.

Fruit and veggies and meat actually contain good things. Good things cost money. Microwave pizza and such are like card board. Card board is cheap.
Organic costs more because the yields are lower.

I eat almost only healthy food and I spend $200 a month.

I don't buy a lot of meat though, and when I do it's on sale.  I use tofu for a lot of recipes, it's dirt cheap.

Go to a bulk store and you will find lots of cheap healthy food there: kasha, bulghur, quinoa, ww pasta.  Spend some time on the internet looking for 'cheap and nutritious foods' and you'll find lots of ideas.

The way I see it. Humans are consumers of every product. Cutting(preservatives) anything and everything lowers the quality of the product, but gives the end user and idea of satisfaction. The more pure a product is, the more money it costs.

I always eat the healthiest. In the end, I am always satisfied. Its like a dank bag of weed.

Not all "regular" food is cut with crap. Much of it is perfectly untouched normal food... from animals who have been given growth hormones.

I don't seem to have breasts or an unduly amount of body hair, so I feel pretty good about my diet as it stands.

I'm almost convinced food is priced per macronutrient calorie.

Foods with actual protein (read: Meat) never fall below a certain price.

Foods with fats never fall below a certain price.

Carbs are cheaper the more high GI they are.

I actually price food out by calorie and the best you can do is $30 a week or so. Anything under that you're either way under maintenance calories or are lacking in a macronutrient.

It's shitty and annoying but not so bad if you put food as number one and then worry about things like clothes, electronics, internet, cable, cell phones, etc....

BTW there is no bigger ripoff than diet food. Pay twice as much for half the calories! Ingenious!!

How about Walden Farms? $5 for a jar of paste with 0 calories? Are you kidding me?

Its not.  Healthy food is extremely cheap.  You're probably buy trendy, hipster food that is billed as being 'healthy' but has never been shown to be healthier (ie organic).

Bulk grains, along with some fresh fruits and vegetables and occasionally meat is extremely cheap.

Fresh fruit and veggies are reasonably cheap. Meat is expensive. What's really expensive is organic food. If you can even find it it costs from 20% to 100% more.

Nope.  I buy fruits and vegetables from a normal grocery store (non-yuppy store).

How much will five servings of veggies and four servings of fruits per day cost you compared to a microwave pizza per day?  There's no comparison.  It is cheaper to eat crap.  Maybe in California and Arizona where the produce doesn't have to be shipped far but I live on the east coast where our produce sections blow and are expensive.

When I get money I gorge on healthy food.  I eat my own fruit salads I make, spinach salads with veggies all over the place, chicken fried up and put on top of whole wheat pasta doused with olive oil,  home-made fruit smoothies, etc..  My body feels amazing.

Then I run out of money and am left with garbage.  Cheap hamburger day at McDonald's.  Slices of cheap and greasy pizza that would clog an artery from fifty feet away.  I wish I was a yuppy.

Maybe where you are but not where I'm from.  I can get a pack of fatty hamburger meat for a couple of bucks.  If I want to buy fruits and vegetables to last a week then I'm looking at over $60 (at least).

If you think that healthy food is more expensive than microwave pizzas and mcdonalds you're delusional.

Also, yea smoothies and olive oil are expensive... they are not healthy either.  You dont need 'fresh' fruit and vegetables to be healthy.  Canned and frozen are fine.  The bulk of healthy calories come from staples: potato, rice, corn, beans etc.. all cheap as hell in ever industrialized nation.
