i bought a twenty dollar heating pad made for sore and painful backs. It gets pretty hot and has three settings. I was wondering if anyone has used one of these durring incubation?

It depends how hot it gets i guess. I use my heating pad on low and it keeps my jars at around 80 so it works.

my first incubator was a big 'ol rubbermaid tub with a heating pad on the very bottom and a wire mesh riser to put the jars on... worked real good, just left the pad on low.

That is my concern as well. I've been contemplating using a heating pad, but am not happy with the risks. I know there are plenty of users out there who use heating pads. I'd hate to be the first example of a reason not to use a heating pad.

Pads aren't meant to be on all the time. You're better off buying a submersible aquarium heater. You can adjust the temp and they work great. -Bruiser

If the fire risk is not reason enough, heating pads can dry out your jars, not to say they will, just to say they can.

In a dream I had good success using using a reptile heating pad. It is designed to be used under a glass aquarium and to run for extended periods of time. So far it has worked fine. If you find that your jars dry out some, just add a little more h20 when making the substrate or just dunk when birthing.

Sorry, I should have added that the pad was also on a timer.

i have used those pads. they are quite safe. however, the real problem is actual temps control, sice it has no thermostat. so, if you are able to get it to work for you maintainig correct temps, go ahed, being very careful about alwys possible fire hazards.

That is Timothy Leary, and yes he was in a cheech and chong movie. He gave cheech the "key" to get out of "prison".

I don't use a heating pad for my jars, I just put them in a black continer in my closet. Now as for incubating the poo when I have fully colonized jars is a different story. I use a heating pad there until the poo completely colonizes. I just use Roadkills horse poo tek and use a heating pad on the bottom instead of an aquarium heater. It works great. Also, look for my gulf coast and cambodian picture post, coming soon. Laters.

this may sound kinda odd but my friend wraps rope lights around his tub that he keeps his jars in. It does a good job of keeping the temp around the low 80's. i think he got the rope lights from target or some shit, they come in all kinds of colors and put off a decent amount of heat...plus they wont burn the place down.
