Guess what!  If you go far enough back, we all have a common ancestor.  You, in fact, are a (very) distant cousin of mine, and everyone on this forum.  Does this have any relevance to anything?

Even im related to a US president! for every generation you have 2^(generation) ancestors.

Parents: 2^1 = 2
Grandparents: 2^2 = 4
Great grandparents: 2^3 = 8
and so on...

Sort of.  Pretty quickly though, most people get into duplicate ancestors.  With your formula the latest common ancestor would be between 29 and 30 generations ago, since 229 is approx. 5 billion and 230 is approx. 10 billion.  I believe that mst scientists who study these things would say that all people, including those from remote tribes in places like Papau/New Guinea, can trace their ancestry back to a common person between 100 and 200 generations ago.

For white people (And don't forget thatBarack is half white, and that most American blacks are part white) I am sure that the most recent common ancestor is much closer.

What signifigance does the range 5-10 billion have?  Are you saying that its only possible to have that many relatives or something?  Or that only that many people have existed, or what?  I kind of doubt both, but could you explain your presumptions with a source if possible?



Anyways, assuming no incest, the 2^generation thing only tells you about you genetic heritage rather than your relatives, so I'd say its the minimum number of relatives you'd have.

John, 2n is the maximum number of direct ancestors that one would have n generations prior.  Since the current world population is 6-7 billion, and is at its peak, its safe to assume that 29 generations ago you did not have 5 billion great x 27 grandparents.

I'm sorry, that I can't cite any sources, since most of what I have said in this thread is remembered from an anthropology textbook i read about five years ago.  ( I sold it back to the bookstore at the end of the semester unfortunately.)  But a google search of "most recent common (human) ancestor" might be illuminating.

As I said, according to my textbook, the majority of scientists who study that sort of thing believe that the most recent common ancestor was somewhere between 100 and 200 generations ago.

It is merely my assumption that if 100 to 200 generations ago all living people were either ancestors of, or not ancestors of, all people living today, whether aboriginal  Australians, Pacific Islander, European, Native American, or anything else, than the most recent common ancestor of all people with European blood (including the Bush family, Barack Obama and European royalty) would have occurred much later.
