Meditation: A useful tool in the demoralization of America???
    #9540254 -

I can see how some may feel that eastern philosophy and meditation can render the individual a prisoner to a growing tyrannical government, but do people understand that the reason we meditate is to transcend this consciousness?

"They" can imprison your body all they want, but you will always have your mind.

I can't see any correlation between meditation and demoralization, if anything the opposite would be true.

If you are the true master of your mind, which mediatation works to do, nothing in this physical reality can effect you whatsoever. Even death is smiled upon.

This is the same like claiming a healthy body is dangerous for you.. there's just no logic behind it at all.

I have to concur. This kind of thinking only affects the physical domain, that oh so believable virtual reality of ours.

Agreed. But I think there exists a problem in encouraging everyone to meditate and focus their mind in a positive way, far removed from tyrannical impulses. Meditation without action may transcend your consciousness, but it leaves untouched all the countless others. I think one goal of meditation is compassion and right action (as in the "noble path").

All of us together comprise the sphere of humanity, but without an aggregate affect of meditation, little is done.

Death may be smiled upon because it is seen no different than birth. Both concepts are constructs, a human way of marking an otherwise continuous event in time.

There is a certain logic to this, but it's the same type of exaggerated propaganda as the idea that drugs are a useful tool for demoralization.

If we accept that drugs or meditation are our keys to happiness, it can leave us less concerned about our loss or ignorance of other freedoms. This is what Thompson noted about the '60s, that a host of drug users rode the wave without anyone guarding the door.

It's great to be master of one's mind, but physical reality is something that needs awareness and responding to as well. Note that meditation is usually made possible only when all physical needs are taken care of, and that many teachers of meditation become absurdly rich in the physical world off of their businesses. Many devote their energies to these physically individualized states rather than working at social involvement and change.

That said, it's no more naturally "demoralizing" than any personal pursuit.

But is there a "right" action in the noble path? I believe part of following such a rigor is a an act of existing rather than action. Instead of pushing and pulling on the fabric of society, I think you should act as a better blueprint for the textile by existing as such a person who exhibits the desirable traits of that change.

But in this there is a serious concern of authenticity. To truly represent the change you wish to see you must follow and pursue each and every act in such a way as to accurately evince these qualities. So if you are a person who only practices what is preached half or even 3/4 of the time, you are still not living authentically and can never hope to achieve that "blueprint" status.

So I think meditation is an incredible vessel for finding and applying such practices, but you are very correct in saying that meditating on act without acting is nonsense.

Meditation is good! There is an in inherent serenity that comes from having ones mind at balance- a peace, a calm; and that is exactly what the government, big business, and the entertainment industry don't want us to attain. If we did we would inevitably become less materialistic, more open minded, and more in control- this would be bad for several reasons. It would make us poor consumers- something that drives the multi trillion dollar industry of companies working round the clock to sell us crap we don't need. It would allow us to see past our simple and short lives and see the big picture- something the government can't have because that would allow us to see what a failure it has become- we would immediately call for 90% of our politicians to be impeached for being greedy, self-serving pieces of shit! And it would cause us to spiritually evolve to a level where we can realize that all life is connected- and instead of destroying and raping the earth of it's natural resources, we would find a way to take the things we need in homeostatic balance- this would be bad for big business- the oil companies and such.

Basically what I am saying is that this is inevitable, unfortunately most likely none of us will ever see it. The natural evolution of man will eventually allow us to be more open minded, more big-picture-conscious, more caring and more accountable, but not for a thousand yeas or so. Obviously there is a minority who already displays these characteristics, but the majority will still be greedy, materialistic, ignorant, petty and hateful assholes for a long time.

So is it up to the minority who can transcend all these distractions to teach others and help accelerate our natural spiritual evolution? Or to just sit back and let evolution run its course... Will we survive long enough for that to happen?
