I think most guides will tell you to focus on your breathing. Just think about the air filling your lungs and then your lungs releasing the air.

Oh and don't worry about sitting with legs crossed or any cliche position, just be comfortable.

breathe out your nose and and count your breathes through it. if u do this for a bit while keeping your mind blank(besides the breath counting)
youll gte a feeling throughout your body and sort of concentrate on itand it will get stronger

if i could rank the importance of all the things i do on a day to day basis, meditation would be number one. To me meditation is the single most profound and valuable activity we have the power to do. Every other action seeks to solve problems in a second hand way. Eg. we have the problem of feeling desire for stuff so we go and try and get stuff.

meditation alone attacks our problems at their root: the sponsoring thought or feeling itself.

its also amazingly hard to do, has a whole host of setbacks and difficulties... takes real effort.

But for me it is worth it. good luck on your journey.

i advise following your breath. focus all your attention on the full inhalation and then the long slow exhalation.

or try a mantra (mentally repeating one word over and over again to the exclusion of all else) eg. oooooooooooooommmmmm. ooooooooooommmmmmmmmmm. ooooooooommmmmmmmmmmm.

or even: God. God. God....

but in the end youll have to try and try again until you find what works for you.

Use this as a primer. When you come upon something that you have never heard of, do some external research on the subject. You Will find what you are looking for.

Crowley ? hehe, perhaps worth a try, but not my wavelength.

hairy, search the web for first 'samatha', then 'vipassana'

Those are the prime buddhistic methods, which 'could' lead you on the right path. Try to find a source, most original to buddhas speakings. I only have a german book-title at hand.

i'd say find a comfertible place, alone, just focus on your breathe, try to stop the internal dialogue inside your head, replace your thoughts with the sound of your breathing, the motion of your breathing, the feeling of it...if you get off track, words, thoughts, people, places and things keep coming to mind, don't feel bad, and don't even apoligize to your self, just get back to work on focusing on your breathing, don't even finish your thought, just shut it down.

i'd do something like this for as long as possible, everyday, everyhour, but when ever you can, really, it's sopposed to help you, not bore or tire you out, or become a hassle, it gets easier, and than you might wanna try other forms of meditation.

mental energy = happiness, IMO.

meditation gives me mental energy and clarity, makes working easier, makes playing funner.

other things to help your everyday mind, get lots of sleep, even an mid day nape is good for you, drink lots of water, take your vitemins, workout/exercise, get lots of sunshine and clean air, and my favourite, relax,,everything is fine.

I'm reading The Eye in the Triangle and I have just come to the place where Crowley rejects Yoga and Buddhism. Interesting synchronicity (but, then, all synchronicities are interesting).
Have you any source for the sword that Crowley describes? It is the same form that Alex Sanders and presumably Gerald Gardner used. I have seen one only once in a shop, but it was over 20 years ago. I do not wish to cut and forge my own, only because I am not actually practicing ceremonial magic, but I would like to display this magical weapon.

Well I did a search and came up with an interesting result.

Crowley Sword

I have never ordered anything from this store because I usually make my own tools but it appears that this sword is constructed to Crowley's specifications.

I don't study much wicca but it is interesting that you say Gardner's sword is similar. I suppose it is possible that his sword was derived directly from Crowley but I am actually not familiar with the true origins of Crowley's sword. The golden dawn uses a sword with similar correlations but seemingly very different in design.

I have never actually made/obtained a ceremonial sword because I personally do not find much practical use for it day-to-day.

I've searched quite a bit, but not under "Crowley Sword." Thank you very much for that link. As I said, I am no longer (not since perhaps 1972) practicing in the outer world with physical tools, but on this cusp of All Hallows Eve the spiritual 'temptation' to assume the archetype ('god form') of Magician comes upon me strongly. This has been effecting me since the 70s.

My Lady does not want any sword in the house. It's fine to keep sharpened Bowie knives by door and night stand, but there is something forboding to her about a sword. She even insisted that the large gargolye on a stand outside our bedroom be the one of a pair that holds a shield, not a sword - and that is just statuary! Despite this, I am attracted, hence...

Of the haunting character of Crowley whose works I've resisted my fascination with, I'm now going to squeeze anything useful from him and discard the rest (as he is said to have done with whole ancient traditions). Will Parfitt, whose books on Kabbalism I respect said 'whatever else may be said of Crowley, he was an exceptional Kabbalist.' After Regardie's book, I managed to obtain fairly cheaply, a hardcover copy of The Confessions of Aleister Crowley, but Regardie warns of editor Symonds negative interpretations.

At any rate, thanks again for the link - you seem to be more easily connected to these matters.

The art of looking inside yourself as your connection with the universe is all too real. Plus simple meditation practices have helped me go from as Isaac Newton said "For every action there is a reaction" I was the reaction and it usually wasn't positive or pretty. To a person who is much more in control of oneself. Of course it's not just meditation but the many philosophy's behind it. Find one that works for you. Here's a website that has alotta info: http://www.beliefnet.com/index/index_60.html?milestoneTypeID=6  :shineon:

wildmind.org has some useful introductory information.

They also offer a couple of guided meditations in realaudio format

The mindfulness of breathing excercise is probably what you're looking for, although it is useful to alternate it with the metta bhavana excercise, because training your mind without strengthening your compassion is generally held to be a recipe for pomposity, arrogance and paranoia.

depends what you expect. if you want to slow your thoughts down a little and gain some clarity then it is very useful. If you are trying to focus your energy on guessing the next lottery numbers, or something external, then it's not very useful.

I taught myself how to meditate at an early age, I would say around 11 or 12, but i didnt know what i was doing.

Here is my technique, but it may or may not work for you. First of all, concentrating on your breathing does help, but it can also be distracting sometimes. For starters, concentrate on "in... out, in... out" for a while, or until you feel you have taken over the subconcious process... then you should try focusing on "out... in, out.. in" in contrast, until "out - in" seems like the correct order.

That is not my favorite method, so here is the one I "discovered" for myself. Close your eyes, and focus on what you see. At first you may be tempted to call the absense of vision / color as simply "black." But if you realize that absence of color is not black, but simply absence of color and you can focus your attention into this "absence," it naturally helps you focus your attention to nothing, which in turn translates quite well into meditation, which to me is focusing your thoughts into nothing.

If that made any sense to anyone, you may be able to put it to good use as I have, before I even understood the concept of meditation, although I had been meditating for years prior.
