spiritual experience

Background: I live in Japan and my wife is Japanese.  She passed away about two weeks ago after battling cancer for over 3 years. There is a small shrine for her in our house that we will keep up until she passes into the next world.  The display includes two urns, a small one containing her "important" bones and a larger one containing the rest of her.  There is also a large picture of her and we give her incense several times a day and offer food and drinks that she liked.  We also surround it with flowers.  I have been sleeping in front of this since she has been there.

My mother came to Japan when my wife died to help me through these times.  She has several prescriptions for anxiety and to help sleep, including ambien.  Last night I cut a 10mg ambien pill to help go to sleep.  I would eyeball it at about a 60/40 split, and I drank the 60% portion.  So we could guesstimate that I drank about 6mg of whatever the active ingredient of ambien is.

I lie down in my futon, and thoughts about returning to the states and my students at work and fruiting pf cakes run through my mind for about 10 minutes.  Then I get the urge to give some incense to my wife.  I do this in the dark, and that is when things start to act, well, out of the ordinary.  In the otherwise dark room, I was able to see shadows of the flowers surrounding my wife's shrine. They seemed to be moving, subtly, as if beckoning to the center of it all where her picture and the incense pot are. I lit a small, hardly luminescent candle, used for lighting multiple incense sticks, and the darkness surrounding my wife's  shrine seemed to come to life.  I could feel a benevolent energy pulse around the area, centralized from where her picture was.  There was not enough light to make any discernible shapes, but I could sense movement and a benign presence. I lit several more sticks and basked in the presence I felt for the next 10-15 minutes until I fell asleep.  I have no doubt that my wife was there that night to soothe me.

Possibly the low light and dreariness of the situation had an effect on this, but this has to be the most spiritual waking experience I have ever had.

Just thought I'd share that with you all.

I'm sorry about the loss of your wife. I will spare you the speech about how drugs alter your perception and ghosts aren't real. Do whatever it is you need to do to get through this, and try to have a happy new year.

I have collected vast amounts of circumstantial evidence that ghosts are real, at least for 49 days after the person's death.

I lost a loved one last year and I suggest reading or listening to Ram Dass' or Eckhart Tolle's thoughts on death, they are very helpful.

Also see the movie 'Ram Dass: Fierce Grace' if you haven't already, it touches on grief as a path to liberation.

Sorrow comes in crashing waves but they subside in time.

49 days. Shes in the Death bardos if you follow Tibetan Buddhism. Its a pretty cool concept actually. A long psychedelic crucible as you get ready for your next life.
