Could swear there was this same topic like a week ago...

I get sleep paralysis and lucid dreams every once in a while. I welcome them, very exciting.

The sleep paralysis can be terrifying though.

I used to get episodes of it. I tried telling a few people at first but they treated me like I was having some sort of dream about alien abduction.
But now I seem to meet a lot of people that have had a run-in with it.

Anyway, it freaks me out.

Interesting that you felt like you were high on DMT when you woke.. because you probably were
The pineal gland produces plenty of it when you dream.. there is also evidence that suggests it secretes a lot more of it during altered states such as lucid dreams or OOBEs, but it produces the most during death.

As far as I am aware, the link between sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming or out of body experiences is very similar. Sleep paralysis occurs when you wake suddenly out of the REM state or deep sleep, your mind is awake but your body is still asleep.. lucid dreaming is a very similar except instead of waking up consciously, you "wake up" inside your dream, filly conscious that it is a dream, still asleep but in full control.

Your DMT dream sounds like a classic lucid dream. Except at the very moment you realized you were dreaming (making it lucid), you suddenly wake up out of deep sleep.. and since your body is like fuck that, I'm enjoying this.. sleep paralysis. Then you went back into unconsciousness, and it sounds like you went out of body. Did you notice a definite change in 'vibrations' during the time which you felt yourself leave the body? In my experience, going out of body produces very 'wave-like' vibrations outside of the normal, kind of hard to explain.. but it's a very noticeable shift in vibrations. Either way.. sleep paralysis, lucid dreams, and OOBEs are very closely related IMO.

The best advice I can give for inducing a full-on lucid dream is to "go with the flow". At the point where you realize you are dreaming is the key.. generally you either realize it and go shit! and wake up, or you realize it and go fuck yeah!, and continue dreaming, but now you are fully lucid in the dream and can have full control over it. It's kind of a two stage thing, lucid dreaming - You realize you are dreaming, then you go with it and make the decision to control the dream. I've found one of the best ways to make this happen is to just reaffirm to yourself in the waking state several times throughout the day, and before you go to sleep "If I go lucid, I want to control my dream", or something along those lines. This puts the idea into your subconscious, and it will be there when you go lucid.

I really love these altered states during sleep. Lucid dreaming is probably one of the coolest things I can think of.. nothing like having superpowers, flying around, etc. Pretty much the only limitation is your own doubts and mental barriers, remove those and you are free to do whatever you please.

As for external aids. Not that you need them, but if you wish to explore this phenomenon further, you might want to look into an herb called Calea Zacatechichi. Also known as the "dream herb".. and has been used for a long time by Chontal shamans in Mexico to induce lucid dreams and "divination" in dreams. I've never experienced it personally, but I've heard many good things about it.

OK, I think this thread spawned a really weird experience I had 2 nights ago so I'll share it here.

I woke up at 3:30AM and had to take a leak.  So I went to the bathroom and then got back in bed.  As I lay there trying to drift off I felt the tingling sensation of sleep paralysis coming on (it often happens to me as I am drifting off, right at the point between being asleep and awake).  I'm sure it was on my mind after just participating in this thread because I immediately thought of the quote above by FractalDust that someone had posted.  I thought I'd give it a try and see where I could take it.  I tired to relax and 'let go' but the sleep paralysis overwhelmed me and I suddenly woke up.  But when I awoke the TV was on.  I often fall asleep with the TV on, but on this particular night I had turned it off.  I didn't feel like I was dreaming but after a minute of laying there I realized that the TV shouldn't be on.  Suddenly I knew I was not awake.  So I just layed there calmly and tried to go lucid and take control of the dream.  But instead the sleep paralysis came back.  Again I tried to go with it but it overwhelmed me and I woke up.  This time I was actually awake and the TV was off.

I was starting to get a little weirded out but still I just lay quietly and tried again to sleep.  Again, sleep paralysis, followed by waking up.  But again, the TV was on!  Still, it seemed so real, not dreamlike at all, and it took me a minute to realize I was not awake!  So I repeated the process, only to wake to the real world once again (TV off).

This pattern continued for nearly an hour.  As the experience wore on things started happening in the dream world (the one with the TV on).  But nothing really strange or dream like.  Just little things.  For example, we have a room mate.  My wifes good friend lives with us right now, but she never stays here (she is always at her boyfriends house).  But at one point I heard her come in the front door and go to her room.  I thought to myself "Wow, she never comes home" before I realized the TV was on again!

It was about 4:30 before I finally drifted off into some restful sleep again.  The experience was really strange.  Not like lucid dreaming because I never had any measure of control.  And the dreams never got dreamlike at all.  I just went back and forth between the real world and the dreamworld going through spurts of sleep paralysis each time.  And I never knew if I was awake or not each time I came out of it.  Toward the end I was learning to pay attention to the TV to figure out where I was.  It was one of the weirdest sober experiences I've ever had.

Wow, awesome experience.

Are you sure?  That would be the time to experiment with certain techniques like "now I lift out of my body" or "now I move to the window".  Have you read my account of an OBE I had a while back?  I (my waking consciousness) was in another world for over an hour.  It was the most incredible thing I've experienced so far ==>  (click)

"Now one of two things will happen, and I haven't learned how to control this even after all these years of conscious astral projection.

You will either stay in the etheric realm where you can still see your body, house and neighborhood, and can explore the earth-realm in real time.

Or you will be transported to the astral plane. If this happens you will find ourself in a brand new world you have never been to. This is where it gets good. You can fly around and explore, meet beings, get lost in buildings, dig in the dirt, drink the rain, and fly deep into the sky. Anything is possible, and you are just as conscious as you are right now reading this, but you are on another planet, in a different dimension."

This is exactly what I was thinking, based on my own experience, before I clicked on this thread. Well said and shows the values of sleep paralysis. If you initially find yourself distressed try to keep this fact in mind and take advantage of this awesome opportunity.
