sleep paralysis
    #9410910 -

is fucking weird shit.

and i get it quite frequently. sometimes i can even feel it coming on as i fall asleep... as opposed to waking up to it. and EVERY single time, it freaks me the fuck out. not always necessarily in a bad way. sometimes its fun. sometimes when i feel it coming on ill play around with it and see how long i can stand it before forcing movement to delay it. sometimes ill wait too long and get stuck... theres that line, and skating that line is sometimes fun.

however, tonight i had an episode that really threw me off guard.

i was having this weird dream, where i was in a classroom of sorts, like i was in college or something. the class was aimed at the proper use of dmt. there was a chair, a recliner at the front of the room. there was also 2 very large ornate fountains on either side of the chair. students would take turns going up to the front of the class and lay back in the chair to smoke some dmt. during this time, the instructor would chant in this really bizarre language while painting the face of the student.

after watching a couple students it was my turn. i climbed into the chair as the instructor handed me the pipe. as soon as i took a hit, the dream changed perspectives on me. i was now floating above my body, near the ceiling of the room. i watched as the instructor painted intricate swirling paterns on my face in multiple shades of blue. this part of the dream was very vivid, i might even go as far to say it felt real.

for a moment i thought to myself, "what the fuck!?"...

the next thing i knew i was no longer looking down at a classroom full of people watching me trip out on dmt. i was watching myself sleep, in my own bed, in my own room. my face was still painted, and the fountains were still there... but i was in my room.

holy shit, im dreaming...

then slam, i awake in my bed in the middle of a sleep paralysis episode. i felt high, as if i had really smoked some dmt. i was awake, yet something still didnt seem right about the reality i found myself in. it felt hard to breath, my chest was tight. i was panicking, freaking out, trying desperately to snap out of it. but i was in it too deep.

so i decided to just lay there and see if i could fall back asleep. i laid there for a minute or so as i felt my consciousness drift, when it happened again. again i found myself hovering over my bed, though this time the transition wasnt so sudden. i actually "felt" myself leave my body. it is to this date the weirdest sensation i have ever felt. the best way i can come up with to describe it, is as if i were riding a psychedelic trail. like, we all know about trails when we are tripping... my body was the object, and my consciousness was the trails that follow, or in this case leave. i remember trying very hard to fight it. all i wanted to do was stay in my body and wake the fuck up. but, it wasnt gonna happen.

so again, im looking down at my body asleep in my bed. this time there was a creature... a demon, an elf, im not really sure what the hell it was. but it was sitting cross legged on my belly and tearing into my chest very violently, with the fucking smirk on its face. this is the last thing i remember before waking up as i jumped out of my bed.

ya, its not really something i feel like i need to prevent though... once its all said and done i usually look back at the experience as an enjoyable one. and on a side note, ive found if i try to sleep after taking some opiates the chances for sleep paralysis are greatly increased.

Sleep paralysis is a bitch sometimes, i've just learned to laugh at the demonic imagery, it seems to make me snap out of it quicker and usually laughing is the first sensation i get back...it's funny because the last time i experienced it was 5 or 6 months ago after watching something about it on TV...must have triggered something? fuck knows...anyways, sleeping on your side or stomach-down help avoid it as well as benzo's (mainly clonazapam is prescribed.)

Your experience sounds more like lucid dreaming to me then sleep paralysis.  If you were still out of your body and seeing imagery that was not there (the painted faces, the demon, etc) it sounds more dream-like.  I have had very vivid lucid dreams where I knew I was dreaming but unable to get out of the dream state.  I posted about one horrific experience few years back here.

I have had sleep paralysis all my life. Sometimes I get it frequently and then other times I'll go long periods without an episode.  But the hallmark of sleep paralysis for me is that I always fully wake up and become aware of my surroundings.  My mind is clear, I am myself, I know where I am and I am no longer dreaming...I am just unable to move.  Like you I have learned to embrace it.  I often do the exact thing you described, that "skating the line" thing.  That is a perfect description.  I let it slowly creep up and overcome me but try to maintain a measure of control.  Sometimes I lose the battle and end up stuck for a bit.  And even after nearly 4 decades of experience with it it can still be a little unsettling when I lose control.

Here is a quote from FractalDust on sleep paralysis awhile back that was truly moving and incredible.

FractalDust said:
I've experienced sleep paralysis all my life since I was young. For many years I felt just like you and didn't know what was happening and would get scared and fight it.

About 13 years ago I started reading about astral projection and was reminded of these night terrors I would experience and soon realized that they were related.

Because of this realization I was able to experience fully conscious astral projections within days of first reading about them.

When you wake up with sleep paralysis you naturally get frightened and want to fight it, but that is the worse possible thing you can do. You must accept this wonderful gift and experience it fully.

Instead of fighting it off you should immediately relax your whole body and still your mind. Soon you will feel vibrations coursing through your body that steadily increase in frequency and intensity.

This is the crucial point now because shit can get pretty weird. The vibrations are strong and loud, the feeling of not being able to move and not being in control can be overwhelming. To top it off you usually will feel like your not alone. Another presence is felt and it usually will seem to be sinister.

Ignore that shit. Don't give in or you will ruin everything. Keep relaxing and force your mind to remain still and thoughtless.

At this point you can start to use your mind to move yourself up and out. It will be smooth. You will feel yourself start to rise out of your body.

When you are still close to the physical body you will have very little control, and will most likely be blind. The number one goal is to get as far away from your body as you can, as quickly as you can.

Move up and out your window and you will feel the change as you enter the night air.

Now one of two things will happen, and I haven't learned how to control this even after all these years of conscious astral projection.

You will either stay in the etheric realm where you can still see your body, house and neighborhood, and can explore the earth-realm in real time.

Or you will be transported to the astral plane. If this happens you will find ourself in a brand new world you have never been to. This is where it gets good. You can fly around and explore, meet beings, get lost in buildings, dig in the dirt, drink the rain, and fly deep into the sky. Anything is possible, and you are just as conscious as you are right now reading this, but you are on another planet, in a different dimension.

Don't fight sleep paralysis. You have a gift. Many people practice their whole life to experience this and either it takes years of dedication, or they give up. You and anyone else who experience involuntary sleep paralysis are blessed.

I realized this years ago, and am forever grateful for this gift.

TTS, I read that dream, that was crazy.

wrestler, I highly suggest you check out this book.  There are other books and authors that are more detailed but this is a really good introductory one and may be all you ever need.  It will give you the basics of what's going on, what to expect, and what is possible with these shifts of consciousness you are experiencing.  Good luck!

I believe I've had it twice in my life. The first time was extremely terrifying, with a swarm of giant bats inside my room, and the second time was extremely pleasurable, almost orgasmic(?!) and outrageously trippy but not very visual.

I'm glad my brain usually goes into and out of sleep without any hiccups like that, I wouldn't want to have to get used to something like that.

ive never really had a full on, lucid dream. ive come close a few times (this being one of them) only to find myself waking up pretty much immediately after realization... sometimes fully conscious, but more often then not into a sleep paralysis episode. and ive found most times aspects of my dream will follow me into the episode... almost always hiding in some kind of dark and sinister overtone.

a question for those of you who experience sleep paralysis on a somewhat regular basis...

is this not "normal"?

i mean, there really is no denying a sleep paralysis episode. its characteristics are very much unique and clearly defined. what i experienced (at one point at least) was most definitely sleep paralysis. specifically, the moment when i shifted from floating over my bed to being in it. it may be that the episode actually didnt last as long as i thought it did, and the majority of the nights experience was actually a lucid dream... but defining such semiconscious states can get pretty sketchy, and any help or thoughts on what might have actually happened would be greatly appreciated.

coincidentally, i think its also relevant to bring up the fact  that most of my near lucid dreams came to with sleep paralysis acting as a catalyst of sorts. do any of you also find a link between these states?

and summit... after reading you vampire dream thread i remembered i read it it before, and got one of those really intense and weird deja vu things. ive never actually been in a situation like yours... not being able to wake up from a dream. that would be some freaky shit. but from the sounds of it i might have been pretty close last night. who knows...

the things that go on inside our heads while we sleep is really beyond most of what im able to comprehend.

care to elaborate?

id like to know how one "degree" of depressants can suppress the state, and another instigate it... would definitely help me understand the issue a bit better.

Hey bro I have sleep paralysis also. I know what you are talkin about when you can feel it creeping up on you. and It freaks me the fuck out when I cant move.

but yeah I went to the doctor and he told me to go to CVS and get Natrol brand Melatonin Time release 1mg.
I have been using it ever since and have not had a problem with sleep paralysis since.

first you tell me benzos prevent sleep paralysis, which is not wrong at all. i have found this to be true from my own experience. then on the topic of opiates and their opposite effect on my sleeping habits, you say this is due to opiates being a depressant... as if being a depressant is the defining factor in the issue.

i may be reading too much into what you were saying, but thats what it seemed to me you were getting at. with benzos and opiates both being depressants, your previous statement about the opiates seems a bit misinformed, or at least incomplete. now its due to the different ways they affect the cns...

what are the differences in how they affect the cns, and how do these differences affect the sleeping mind? you talk like you think you know what you are talking about, yet it seems like you are mostly talking out of your ass. id like to know.
