another thing.. if your casings fill your fruiting chamber.. you don't need perlite. it's a mess and isn't really necessary in most cases with casings. just mist the walls once a day or once every two days and make sure the casing layer stays as moist as it was when you first applied it. mist with a very fine mist and don't spray to much.. if the 50/50 changes color and gets lighter then it's time to mist.. keeping the casing layer moist is imperative when working with casings, your yields will be much higher when sticking to this one simple factor. that along with fanning 3 times a day and you should be set.

Thanks, great set of info.

Should I mist more than once a day. Sometimes I question the lid; it seems like it is keeping the humidity in, but there are times when I am pessimistic. ShouldI just spray more than once a day just to be sure? In addtion, I have 4 colonizing cakes, they are pretty big alum pans, does it matter If I get a extremely large rubbermaid to fit all 4 or should I get 2 separate smaller ones?

fan 3 times a day.. mist the walls once a day or every 2, 3 or 4 days depending on the amount of condensation on the walls.. if you can see a little water on the sides then you're fine..

the casing layer is self explanatory.. the first 5 or 6 days after birthing into the fruiting chamber are most important. just make sure the moisture content stays the same as it was when you first applied the layer. don't overmist.. you can usually judge this by the color change. I'd recommend not waiting any longer than 20-25% coverage before exposing to light. I usually birth mine after I see a few differnt patches of mycelium pop up. Apply a light layer after each flush as well.

I use the meatloaf tins.. that way if you get contams it doesn't blow the whole casing.. only one smaller casing at a time usually. just make sure your rubbermaids are full.. or at least 80% full and you won't need to mist the walls much.

use 2 half pints per tin.. 1/2 inch bottom perlite layer and half inch top casing layer is ideal

Well I went in search of Jiffy Mix. I asked a nursery if they had it, and she said that Jiffy mix is a General name not a brand name, is she correct? Well she pointed this kind out to me, will this work for my casing layer?

All Purpose Potting Soil
Black Gold - Brand

Contains:
Sphagnum Peat Moss
Earthworm Castings
Forest Humus
Oyster Shell

If Jiffy Mix is a specific brand, where can I find it? Walmart?

No, here is a picture of a bag of Jiffy Mix. It is a brand name.

Sounds like she took you for a ride. That stuff isn?t even remotely 50/50+ aside from the fact that it has peat and lime. Jiffy Mix would be superior to that for less money.

If you?re looking for a substitute, read the label and make sure it?s only peat, verm, and lime. Here is the label from Jiffy Mix:

Use that soil you purchased for growing plants.

Good luck...

Thank God because I didnt buy it. Just wrote down the info. Where can you find Jiffy Mix? I went to Home Depot K Mart and a nursery and no one had it.

I'm not sure. A friend of mine in the states says he gets his from Lowe's. I'm assuming that's where you live, so try there. I can't verify this though.

Jiffy mix can be a general name. I have seen three different brands that sell it, all labeled as jiffy mix. The important thing is the ingredients, though, peat, verm, and lime.

Jiffy-Mix is a brand name. Notice the "R" with a circle around it after the name in the picture? That means it's a registered trademark. Doh.

Are you implying that I'm lying mickey?  I've always mixed my own 50/50+ so I never bought a pre-mixed bag.  But the bags they sell at the Wal-mart by me that say jiffy mix on them look nothing like that bag.  But it has been a while since I looked there, unless they changed the design of the bag.  If not then somebody's ripping off Jiffy.

If it says Jiffy-Mix on the bag, it is the brand name. Look again.

why are you so worried about making it yourself? it's easy as hell.. just mix up verm and peat in a big bowl.. equal amounts of both.. buy a bag of hydrated lime at any garden store.. only add a little hydrated lime, it's very strong.. don't use the standard 4:1 ratio you use with limetone.. mix it all up and there you go. easy as hell.. I don't even know why you're wasting your time looking for jiffy mix.

nuke on high 10 minutes.. wait till it cools.. bring to the right mositure content and you're good.

you don't need them if you use hydrated lime.. try reading a little more on casing in the faq.. this will answer all your questions.

they also provide a better base for the myceliul network to hold onto.
Allowing the mushrooms to grow bigger without falling over.

The bags of jiffy mix I saw were different also, wasn't sure so I didn't buy them. Saw them at Home-Depot and it said Jiffy-Mix +. What the hell does the + mean. It contained peat, lime, vermiculte.

DERRAYLD we are referring to ph levels here.. lime and oyster shells do the same in that regard, so you don't need both, only one or the other.

the part about holding the shrooms up is so minute it doesn't really matter either way.
