50/50+ w/o hydrated lime, possible?
    #1654142 -

Hello is it possible to use the 50/50+ tek without hydrated lime? I bought lime from the gardening store but I have no idea if it's hydrated. I know the purpose of it is to raise the  ph immediately and the oyster shells act as a buffer. So it seems to me you would need the lime. Where can I find hydrated lime? Is it different from gardening lime? Are there alternatives to using the hydrated lime? I really need to know these answers as soon as possible! Thanks! :mushroom2:

It's possable to do a 50/50 with coco coir and verm but a 50/50+ is with coco coir, verm, and hydrated lime. Basically hydrated lime is used for the same purpose as the oystershell is, you don't have to use both but you can. You can use pickeling lime as an alternative, you can find it in almost any grocery store or whole foods store. I hoped this helped you a little and good luck.

Ok thanks for the reply.
The 50/50+ I was referring to was verm/peat+ ph adjuster(hydrated lime) and buffer (oyster shells).
Should I just say fuck it with the peat moss and get some coir/verm+ oyster shells? Also, does the ph have to be adjusted or would this coir/verm mixture be neutral? I am aware that the buffer would still be included. Thanks!

You can get hydrated lime here. The shipping costs as much as the product, but if ya can't get it anywhere else. . .

Try the 50/50 tek which includes:

1 part Vermiculite
1 part Jiffy Mix (a pre-made mix of peat moss, perlite, lime)

I've heard it works great....that's what my FOAF is planning on using, because the lime is already added to make the pH neutral.

but don't use peat without the lime, it's too acidic.

My FOAF just bought some potting mix, here's the specifics:

Schultz Professional Potting Soil Plus
ingredients:
Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss, Horticultural Perlite, and Lime for pH balance.

I've heard people have great success w/ with this specific type of potting soil, so give it a shot I say.

Every normal potting soil has a slightly acidic pH, from 5-6, so I?d add some limestone flour nevertheless.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. what I've been wondering is if you added enough crushed oyster shells, if it would raise the ph... or if it ONLY releases it slowly.
hmm. perhaps it'd be easier to go with coir.
By the way, can anyone vouch for the coir/verm method posted above, where you sterilize by microwave? Just leary about that because I think microwaves are variable and unpredictable.    :spliff:

Slowly.

I use this method. You don?t really sterilize it, you basically pasteurize it, the only things you want to kill are living molds and mold spores. And insects. The other things survive.
