Please help with possible typo on 50/50+ hydrated lime measurement
    #4026519 - 04/07/05 03:48 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I am about to mix my 50/50+ casing mix according to the tek and I noticed what appears to be a typo. Every ingredient denotes a cup or half cup measurement except the hydrated lime. The hydrated lime is denoted with "1.2" cups.

The problem is that the period and forward slash are right next to each other on the keyboard so I don't know if they meant "1.2" cups or "1/2" cup and just struck the wrong key. This is a key ingredient for the casing and too much lime will probably kill the mycelium.

I have a total of 31 cups with the verm and peat, so what sounds correct on the hydrated lime, 1.2 cups or 1/2 cup.

I've searched on the forum but no one addresses this possible typo. Please help ASAP, I'm ready to case today. Thank you.

Go with one even cup for that much casing

Thanks Diver. So do you think that they meant 1.2 cups then?

I don't know what they meant, but 1 cup is a safe amount considering how much casing mix you have there.

Appreciate the insight. 1 cup it is. I emailed the original author in hopes that he can clear up the possible typo for future shroomers. Hopefully he'll respond.

I did get a response from the author, Ryche Hawk. He says that it is not a typo and the measurement is supposed to read 1.2 cups. I took some advice from Diver and used only 1 cup for the mix and things are going smoothly.

Make sure you use the recommended brand though. The "Hi Yield" brand is what is recommended in the recipe. You'll have to go to a specialty gardening store to find it. Home Depot, Ace Hardware, and Lowes had nothing in my area. I found it at a place called O'Tooles.

I also found crushed oyster shells, the large chunk kind that was recommended by Ryche Hawk, at a local feedstore. A 50# bag cost $12.99. There is no tax on farm feeds, so that's all you pay.
