Taping lid holes.
    #929145 - 10/03/02 05:09 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I've read here and there about taping over holes made in the jar lids. Should the tape be taken off after pressure cooking? (for better air exchange during incubation, I guess)

What is the tape for exactly?

My friend never put tape on them and has not had any problems. But he dose use the vermiculite barrier. And covers with foil when pc cooking.

Someone all so told my friend that the glue from certain types of tape was a good place for contam to start but not sure how true that is.

I believe you misunderstood your friend. Paper tape such as masking tape may harbor contamination. In other words, it's not the adhesive. This is why many people prefer plastic tape.

Interesting.

For one taped jar, I noticed a hint of germination today, two days after innoculation. Probably it will look like mycellium tomorrow. This seems like a good start, and makes me think I haven't slowed down growth yet from taping over the holes.

I've also read some guy's log where he says that his colonization was stuck at 50% until he untaped his jars. Then the colonization got going again.

Maybe the taped jars start out with a good supply of oxygen in them. This gets depleted after a bit, and then the myc needs fresh air after that.

Maybe also its a good idea to take the tape off after a certain amount of colonization has occurred. Contams would have less of a foothold at that point, and the myc would finish colonizing faster.

Any thoughts? It is interesting to me from the scientific, as well as practical, point of view.

The contamination would be present in the tape after pressure-cooking while it was affixed to the jars?

I've got paper tape on mine. Maybe I should not have used it.

The dry verm barrier is very effective in keeping contaminants out of the substrate, but it is not foolproof. There is still a slight chance that contaminants may invade your BRF. This is exacerbated with excessive handling as this often makes the verm shift allowing contaminants to penetrate deeper into the jars. Tape of course alleviates these concerns, but as vato stated, you will get better air exchange without it.

Edit:

No.

I use masking tape all the time without any issues. Just don't let it stay wet for long periods of time.
