some people say that mycelium needs to have plenty of oxygen while colonizing, I dont believe it does and i know plenty of people that tape their holes.

a good compramize is to tape the holes until the substrate is 1/2 colonized, then untape the holes to allow some oxygen in.

There are two important factors here: air exchange and resistance from contams. Tape is one method, but electrical tape has a tendancy to absorb moisture from the air and loose its stickiness.

I put tape back over the holes after I inject and I usually colonize within 15 -20 days, So will I colonize faster if I leave the tape off, I use the standard PF method and use 1 - 1 1/2cc per jar. Temps are about 75 - 80.

The electric tape should be fine. I only think a good tin-foil cover is necessary.

I agree with AM, I use tin foil only and my jars usually colonize pretty dang fast.

I find that a loose foil lid works best as well but if you do want to use tape micro pore tape is your best option as the mycelium can breathe through this barrier.

If you have a top layer of dry sterilized vermiculite you don't even need to cover the holes. I don't and I don't get any problems.

I leave tape over the holes and usually get full colonization within 10 days.

I just use 1 piece of foil folded in half and moulded into a lid and then another piece of foil fit loosely over the top of that so you have three layers altogether.

Just steralize them in the normal way ie. pressure cooking or steaming in a pot.

Sterilize them while on the lids with the jars.
