Bullshit - risking a ban, you're purely ignorant of the underlying causes of the crisis, and refuse to study.

when was the issue first brought to light? that's right, 1998
prior to the passage of Graham Leach Bliley, it was again
brought up in 2001.. I'm well aware of what's been going on
because instead of being like the rest, I liquidated and took
advantage of the slump in property prices

To Mods: that being said i didn't try to spam this forum nor run up my post count bc i don't care about that crap. i found good articles and tried to post them. didn't read the rules as i usually post in photo gallery. thats my fault, ill make sure i put some input next time mods. sorry. wasn't intentional. i just find it strange that this post didn't get closed like the other 5 when i didn't put any commentary into this thread either. i know for next time. any way we can open those other threads so i can post something in them?

a few thing causing this problem

we borrowed money to consume

we are in a bubble economy that bursted.

thus our government is trying to reinflate it. but it will eventually pop. and pop much worse after all these bailouts and money we keep giving out. upward of the trillions already these last few months. if they keep spending, they keep digging a deeper hole.

eased up lending standards passed by the carter administration. and there are tons of more reasons but these were a few.

we are facing hyperinflation once china and the rest of the world don't want to lend to us anymore. when they have no faith in the usd which is happening right now, they will start buying back things from us with us dollars. thus hyperinflation.

bad times are ahead.

example

wbs went up to 10 bucks from 7 bucks a month ago for a 25lb bag.

foil was 3.50 for 200sf. in a months time it doubled to almost 7.50$. im scard to see what it is now. last i saw close to 8 where i am.  that right there is an indication of inflation. they say that gas prices influence food prices. well, the gas just went down to half it was a few months ago. and i have not seen any food prices drop. they increased. so please tell me the government is telling me the truth. i think not.

honestly, i think it lies much deeper than the last administration. we are looking at 40 years of politics that caused this mess.

all these guys pockets are lined by the same people. with this corruption, you can't get an honest politician that could actually get elected. they are so concerned with reelection and the short term that they don't care about policies for the future. all they care about is re election. politics are there to keep everyone divided. why do you think there is no progress?

Right. The problem lies in the political culture itself. This means both sides (all sides) being for the most part corrupt or fear driven. And behind this disfunction is the disfunction of the average citizen who gives it power.

For this reason there is no hope of change anytime in the future IMO. It's fucking human nature.

Not a popular POV in this forum I'm guessing.

I've also noticed that! The barley I use as spawn went from $0.89 a pound to $1.19 a pound in Sept. Now its $1.39 a pound.

Which is what's so troubling.

On a related note, our government here in Aus just announced they'll be giving money to local councils on the proviso they spend it as soon as possible - a miniature "new deal". We'll see how it goes.

Does it really matter if Bush can veto anything as long enough Republicans don't vote in favor of a Democratic bill? So technically Democrats haven't been in control of shit...

Please list for us the vetoes passed by Bush. George W Bush passed BY FAR the least number of vetoes of any president in the last seventy years or so. By like an order of magnitude or something, it's so ridiculous.

The reality is that the Dems have been in control of the nation's purse strings for the last two years. Bush doesn't decide what money gets spent, Congress does. Look it up if you don't believe me. I swear I'm not making this up - that's how the Constitution has set up the various branches of government, honest injun.

So then you would agree that Bush is very much part of the problem as he has overseen the largest expansion of government since LBJ and has done precious little to stop it.  Bush went along with the 'loyal opposition' and they went along with him in all his big government, Unitary Executive power grabs.

As I have stated in this forum on numerous occasions, Bush not only discovered the veto pen far too late, he himself actively pushed for the largest single new entitlement in recent times - the prescription medicine giveaway for seniors. It is true that most of the really huge increases were passed by veto-proof margins (three cheers for bipartisan legislation, right?) but certainly not all of them were.

Interesting, I just looked it up and you're right, he only signed 12 vetoes, compared to (say) Clinton's 37. But 11 of those 12 vetoes were in the last 2 years. Apart from the Stem Cell funding bill, which he (tragically) vetoed, he didn't veto anything produced by the Republican-controlled senate. So much for checks and balances - the GOP had the house, senate, presidency and the supreme court.

Now the shoe's on the other foot, as they say...

i know man i wasn't trying to jump down your throat. just saying that its many peoples faults know what i mean. im not sure about the bills name that was passed i can look it up. but carter passed something that eased up lending standards for lower income families that is the root cause of our problems today. although the crap loans have something to do with it as well. so its not something that any 1 president could have done anything about. and in actuality, bush actually warned all the big lenders a few years ago about their problems. but no one listened.

sorry to sound hostile. i just type real fast man.

im sure your right. i just know carter passed the eased lending standards. ive read through tons of the info. just don't have the direct info at hand. but could look it up. thanks for clearing that up.

yes, and icelands economy collapsed. i read an article talking about how all the imports and shipments that came in couldn't even be bought bc the banks didn't have enough capital to convert the iceland money to foreign currency so many of imports couldn't be bought. and they were saying how its a modern country and everything was normal, then all of the sudden. the entire economy just tanked. quite amazing to say the least.

good discussion on this thread. thanks guys!

also to add to your comment. this is interesting. when local governments can't take in enough tax base due to foreclosures and such. local government shut down. massachussettes, california, atlanta, philidelphia and another city are asking for bailouts just to pay local governments. this is really bad news.

what happens next?

local police force are reduced, utilities, local governments... bad news...

this is a real serious issue i find it more serious than the bailout of crappy auto makers that don't make fuel efficient cars.

now in the great depression unemployment was what like 35%. correct me if im wrong. but, if our governments are already showing these signs now, the news of 70k people being laid off every few days does nothing to make anything look positive for the future.

i have read a few books talking of economic collapse comparing average number of baby boomers to a healthy consumer economy. and have also read things such that the gdp of our nation is so fluffed that its not a real indicator of a healthy economy. being unbiased i am not sure where i stand on that issue but i do feel that something crazy is happening. not the end of the world, the end of the world as we know it. we need to go back to the basics imho.

But the government already pays for research, and most research is government funded. You should either cut off all funding (your position) or fund everything (within reason; my position). But that's not what happened here. The decision to cut off stem cell research funding was not made on economic grounds. It was made on religious grounds. That's what's so heinous about it.
