Incubator question
    #910295 - 09/26/02 06:30 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm

I just built this incubator. I was wondering if I could just use the lid of the rubbermaid instead of a blanket to cover it...I mean...wouldn't that make more sense? Just need to know.

Has anyone tried making this same incubator? How well does it work?
How much water did you use? (I know it says how much on the site, but it's not as clear as I would have wanted)

It should be fine as long as it doesn't allow any light in...I haven't built that one, but know a guy who has. As far as I know it worked as well as any other..you could try putting the balnket over the lid of the bin too, just to make it more discreet. You have so many options available for setups and as long as you have certain requirments met, most should work quite well.

I attempted this one too. I found that even using a small amount of water, the inner tub would tend to float on the water. I ended up putting down 4 glass spice cups for the inner tub to sit on. I use a beach towel and a light blanket on top. I found that the humidity rises very quickly with the towel resting on the jars. I alternate the towel/blanket from resting on the jars to just covering the top. Works pretty well I think.....

That's exactly what mine looks like.....

I forgot to add that the tubs I bought have some grooves in them as part of the mold. This creates an uneven surface for the jars to rest on. I'm not entirely sure if this is lending itself to my slow colonization times, but I do notice that some of my jars are warmer to the touch than others.

SWIM uses a styrefoam cooler. Better insulation, cheaper and disposable. He uses a 50 Watt fishtank heater with thermostat in a thick hard plastic tumbler. Set inside the cooler with a notch cut in the lip of the cooler for the cord. Lid fits snugly, no light. Keeps the temp around 82 and humidy very high. The jars in the incubator colonize twice as quickly as the ones in an ordinary box. His setup holds about 36 jars and cost about 20$.

Peace.

Should I wash my hand and use gloves before I open the incubator to visit the jars?
