incubator questione
    #1032370 - 11/07/02 12:10 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I used the idea from pf tek for simple minds to make an incubator with two containers and this fish tank heater in water in the bottom one. I have a blanket resting over the top of the top container. I would put the original tubberware container on but it maintains about 82-86 so I figured if it's not broke, don't fix it. I do however have the jars sitting on the bottom of the second container (the one floating in the warm water. I don't know if the tempature for the bottom is perhaps too high. Should I put something in the bottom i.e. blanket, newspaper, for them to sit on or is that extra radiatiing heat good for them. If anyone else has built a similar setup let me know your experiences or advice. thanks.

I recommend that you put a thermometer in the water to determine the actual temperature. You don't want it to get too hot.

I'm not really interested in the temp of the water though becasue the jars aren't in the water. They are in a seperate container floating on the water. I measure the air temp of the container the jars are in and that's where I get my reading. I just wanted to know what other people do and if there is perhaps too much heat from the bottom of the container that touches the water.

I do exactly the same as you, and I have a blanket in the bottom.

awesome. Do you think the way I have it set up now could be the reason my substrate is dry. I know my ratio was a bit off but I saw a little bit of condesation in the jars the first few days (which I was told is a sign there is enough moisture) and then it was almost all gone. It has been almost a full week and the B+ show no sign of growth.

What I did for my inccubator cost less, was easier to put to gether, and worked perfect!!!! Ok what I did was take a rubbermaid container (one that is not see through of coarse), and I put a large bowl of water in the rubbermaid; then I put my submersable fish tank heater in the bowl of water; next I covered the bowl with tinfoil then messed around with my fish tank heater until it was the right temp in my incubator!!!!! Anyway I hope this helps that is if you decide to give it a shot!!!!!!

you wrote something that made me think about my container. It is clear but I have the blanket folded over it on all sides. Is complete darkness completely neccessary. I mean it's pretty damn dark in there so should I just keep it as is or go out of my way to completely light proof it?

It takes only a small amount of light to induce pinning.

so, you're saying I should paint it or something? Make sure absolutely no light gets in? I mean it's really not that much light I don't think.
