Explicit Reality in Society
    #9066794 -

All of what is believed to be real is based on a belief of how it is real; whether by direct personal experience, or mechanism of indirect experience. In modern society consensus on what is real is imperative to ordinary discourse.

In current society trends are such that a large part of reality is left implicit, more tending to be left implicit in more conservative settings. Leaving elements of reality implicit is used to imply knowledge as a strength and to unite the parties who have the advantage of leaving it implicit. (You will look stupid if you ask for the obvious!) Parts of biological and sexual reality are also left implicit to 'protect' dogmatic foundation; some things are not to be discussed (explicitly implicit!).

Explicit reality in society would indeed be hard to picture; making someone feel lesser for being less knowledgeable would now be the criminality, as opposed to the being less knowledgeable. Avoiding discussion of sexual or biological arrangement would now be taboo.

What positive effects might this have?

Weakness might be addressed as something that could only be interpersonal, not intrapersonal. Specialization might dissolve in favor of a generally more capable populous. Agendas would be much more difficult to keep in secret.

What negative effects?

Privacy would likely shift in meaning; emotional truths would likely become more focal as mechanisms of belief were revealed. Things like intellectual property and rights to secrecy would be hard to maintain. People would likely undergo a period of un-comfortability if they had been used to implicit society first.

I doubt I have anywhere near exhausted explanations for and effects of explicit reality, feel free to question or expand.

A) Is explicit reality in society desirable to you?

B) Is it possible?

C) How could one approach the transition?

Hmm...very interesting topic. I agree that most people discourse about what is generally held to be real. That does not mean, however, that what they talk about is actually not real.

Assuming we move to this explicit reality you speak of, ordinary discourse would then be about what is explicit.

But thats not really an important point.

It sounds to me like you are talking about a society where everyone is empathetic. It would be desirable to support the weak, rather than shun them, to enlighten the unknowledgable, rather than ignore them or put them down. It sounds like a very noble society, one which I would definitely endorse!

I think it is possible, but there would have to be a major paradigm shift. It would have to start with the children, of course, as most adults are not willing (or extremely resistant, even violently so, to change). That means education. Teach children that life is not about getting a job and earning money, its about an on-going learning experience, where every thing and every person must be cherished. School should be focused more on values, and less about facts. Facts and knowledge come with time. Children should be encouraged to follow whatever paths they like, they shouldn't be restricted because we think they might fit in better some place else, or because what they do isn't "useful".

I'm sure this type of society would develop its own problems in time of course...but those kind of things are hard to predict.

Sometimes I wonder if native societies were more like explicit societies, and this is part of why they were vulnerable to neo-humans with implicit social mentality.

I also wonder if explicit society would, in fact, remove specialization; or whether it would solidify it more. If structuring of society were becoming explicit, I don't know what would prevent people from being explicitly positioned within it.

Actually I think it might encourage specialization. Everyone would be encouraged to follow their talents and their own will. I think that would lead to a lot of specific development in people.

I say we abolish language and make the distinction between explicit and implicit reality moot.

Yeah, in review; something as general as 'explicit society' is too absolute of a condition to really exist. Today our society isn't entirely implicit, just largely.

I suppose it would just be the direction of explicit communication that would be desirable; revealing the intentional behind the functioning of dogma, the motives behind leaders who speak to the populace like children, the fallacies in the wars on drugs and terror. The mainstream media approach helps prevent progress like this by repeating unexplored coined phrases that are supposed to be assumed into emotional context directly, bypassing intellectual context.

Just say no, are you with us or against us?

Love this topic, and appreciate the good intro to it made by ExplosiveMango

A) Is explicit reality in society desirable to you?

Absolutely, but given certain conditions - i.e. no more wars.  It would have to be a utopia really.

B) Is it possible?

I feel it is, with the help of technology and the right course of actions taken at high levels of power.  This is highly unlikely as the way people get power currently almost forces them to eat fruit from the poison tree.  Perhaps monarchy is what we need? No perhaps not.  Certainly a revolution of society, as you say specialization overturned or perhaps no longer necessary?  i.e. a society so technologically advanced it can no longer affect the technological change, but technology becomes a force of intelligence unto its own order.  Scary thought but nonetheless might lead to the slow destruction of society as we know it, and give birth to our dreams for a new one.

C) How could one approach the transition?

Well I suppose I just explained it.  I doubt it could happen in any single lifetime which kind of voids the question, but if it were I'd say psychedelics will play a huge role, if only the study of them and how they affect the mind and can open the doors for change.

The scene is a PRESCHOOL, a clean building fronted by a shining play structure and an immaculate sandbox. The day is bright and warm, and excited children break loose from their proud parents' hand-holdings to talk with or stare at the other newcomers; this is the first day ever in school for these kids. The school bell rings. Letting out exuberant shouts and waving goodbye to smiling moms and dads, the kids rush to the beckoning instructors.

Cut to the CLASSROOM, barren of any toys or posters, kids silent and ashen-faced, rigid in their antique desks, eyes darting in terror to the imperious black-robed instructors circling the desk-grid with cold gazes and flaming torches in their hands, the only light in the dank room, unadorned roughened stone on all sides. One instructor stands at a kind of pulpit raised in the front center of the room and glowers down at the children, clearly the master of the proceedings.

MASTER:
Kids, let me tell you something. (Pause)
Everyone in your life will lie to you, and this includes me, though usually they don't lie on purpose.
People are getting slaughtered - dismembered and tortured - because of certain beliefs and appearances that they were born and raised with, because people believe that uncontrollable differences are inexcusable.
But let me tell you this: death doesn't even matter. You are going to die, kids; it doesn't matter. Killing matters because it's stupid; nobody likes it and it won't do what it's expected to do because you can't destroy anything.
Let me be explicit: everything you could possibly have a concept of is wrong because you have a concept of it; you've separated life into individual pieces despite it being an impossibility that anything could be individual. You cannot define something as separate from everything else because any definition is contingent on everything else being separate from it.
Do you know what drugs are, kids? Everything is a drug. (Breaks off; glances at wristwatch)

OK, that's all. Go out and play. Think about what I've told you. There is no love or respect without harsh truths.

Children are guided out of CLASSROOM to find PSYCHEDELIC WONDERLAND has replaced the outside. They wave their hands and observe trail effects, talk to each other and discover hidden reserves of empathetic understanding, speak in tongues to each other, realize they do not require words to communicate most thoughts. After recess, they gladly file back in, no longer afraid of the once-intimidating CLASSROOM or MASTER, eager to hear more. MASTER leads them back outside for the next lesson.
