san pedro - growing/feeding tips?
    #9053680 -

i have a san pedro with roots that is not yet planted.  im going to pot it in a week or so but am trying to get my ducks in a row first.  from what ive read there are growing months and dormant/winter months which you care for the cactus differently.  i see im going to want to get a 8-10" pot that allows for drainage.  cover the bottom with 1" of drainage rocks and mix the soil 50/50 with garden soil and perlite.  so i have all that down but heres a couple things i havent grasped because ive never taken care of a plant before:

* how often do i water it and how much?  ive heard the "stick your finger in the soil" comment but on average just so i have a general idea, like 1 cup of water every month or something during growing season? <- complete guess there

* ive heard to "feed" it 15/30/15 but i know nothing about this type of stuff, do i just pour some of that 15/30/15 on top of the soil?  also how often do you do this and how much?

* ive heard you can "stress" the cactus with 20/20/20 instead of the regular 15/30/15 for awhile to improve alkaloid content.  is this true?

* should i use slow-release rock powders for minerals?  if so, how much and how often?

*what months are good to alternate between growing season (like April-Sept) and being dormant (like Oct-March or is that too long)?

water when the soil is dry.

get a liquid feed and follow the instructions, you dilute with water.

i don't think that feeding a trichocereus a balanced nutrient solution will stress it, they are quite fond of nitrogen.

i don't know about powdered minerals, again buy some and read the instructions.

depends on where you live as to how long dormancy will be.

If you're in Florida, you can fertilize now until the end of November.
Or Texas for that matter, much more north and nute info wont be helpful to you this year.

Well if it's cold where you are at now then I wouldn't bother with fertilizer unless you have lights and heating lamps to keep them warm.
Just wait until next year and pickout a good fertilizer I just use generic miracle grow, never had a plant that complained.
