My San Pedro Cactus
    #805093 - 08/08/02 03:54 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

hi.....guys

I have gotten several San Pedro Cactus from psilocybe cubensis and wanted to share some pictures of them.
I can?t post them all cause my limit for the day is up.
but here are a few pics.

Here is a cutting I got almost a month ago....Its got a new pup coming out!

Here is a tip I recieved today and planted.

I also got a 13" middle cutting...I?m going to make several cuttings and make more!
I?ll post pictures tomorrow.

I think I?m going to get addicted to growing and collecting cactus!

I?d like to thank psilocybe cubensis for the great trade....and teaching me how to grow cactus.....great guy!!!!

I'd like some cuttings. I live up in Canada, don't know how much luck those
gems would have getting past our friendly customs agents.

How does one go about "hitting you up"?

Cyberius....cactus cuttings are fine to send trans-border, don't worry. Make sure anyone sending you them clearly labels them as NON-ROOTED CUTTING.

Mr. Psilocybe Cubensis is a mighty generous fella. You guys are very lucky getting those beautiful cuttings

Interesting that you're trying to root some sideways cuttings to get clusters. I've tried that myself and didn't have much luck. They rooted fine but I never got any pups off it. I have bought some pedro clusters that were grown that way though.

Maybe I'll have to give it another go sometime.

Here is the 13" section that psilocybe cubensis sent me.

I wanted to make more cactus so I cut it up into sections.

I?ll post pictures in about a month.

Help Me turn my thumbs green [Re: Roadkill]
    #862341 - 09/03/02 06:46 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

When I did small cuttings if I planted them too soon the would rot.
If I planted them too late they would shrivel & die.I had good luck with larger
pieces planted both horizontally and vertically. They always took a long time
to root & sprout pups.I have had a lot of success with seeds too.

I guess I should stick to what works.
I have little sun in my location.

Any advice?
Any advice on some grow lamps for cacti.
Should I give it up or move to arizona.

PC told me when making cuttings to let them sit for 3 weeks before planting them.
This has worked very well for me.

As far as growing cactus from seeds.....I have a bunch coming.....I have never done them yet....but I read alot and learn really fast.
I'm thinking of buying a seed propagation dome with the heating mat.

As far as Sun goes.....I'm in the same boat as you in a few weeks.
Seattle has terrible Fall's and Winter's.
Guess I'll be reading alot.....real soon.

Biggest problem with seeds has been fungus.
I haven't used fungicide yet, except light bleach solution. I am trying h2o2 now.
I think steralizing the soil is a good Idea.I never did it but will
in the future.I have been soaking them for a few days first this
seems to increase the germination rate or speeds it up.
I tend to change all the variables at once so I don't know what
did what.

I have heard different things about sunlight during germination.
I also heard the light can help keep away fungus.
It's good to pop the seed shell off the seedling if it gets stuck, this is a good place for fungus to develop.

Most of my seedlings end up sticking up out of the soil too high.So I add a little
soil after they sprout.

How fast do you find your pup growing? Mine grows between 1/4-1/2" a day. It's pretty remarkable. Wondering if this was the norm or not.

hi....Uno

I wish mine grew that fast!

I think living in Seattle really slows them down.

I've bought what seems to be a san pedro cactus, it's been at home for like a month with alot of sun, very little watering, and hardly no growth... it was already rooted ans stuff, not very big, what could be the problem? water?

Hum.. well, I try watering it every week ( I only watered it about twice since it arrived, with not alot of water.. that's one month ago..), with some cactus fertilizer, and let the wtaer go through all the soil.. is that a bad idea? too much water?

I was replying to Uno's post about pedro pups growing 1/4-1/2" in day. I am not cacti expert and may be wrong, but I dont think that is realistic. I do have a few cacti of my own. One has a pup a month old just smaller than a dime. I also live in Wa state so results may differ, pretty warm here lately though

I would guess that it would depend on how large a cactus it was growing from.

When the pup first sprouted it was growing between 1/16 to 1/8" day. after a week or 2, it started growing as much as previously stated. After a week or 2 growing really fast, it has slowed slightly. It seemed like it just hit its growth curve to establish itself, not really sure.
