san pedro -too thin
    #482466 - 12/06/01 09:08 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

i have 2 healthy san pedros growing, both about 2 feet high.
prob is they only grow upwards and not outwards.
i can stake em, but at this rate one is definitely gonna topple, snap off near the base.
is there anyway to get them to chubby out?

also, im pretty ignorant on the habits of cactii, but mine always grow about an inch during the full moon, wish we had more full moons...

lots of light and lots of water will make them chubby up.

Grafting won't do shit unless the cacti get enough light.

Get a good cacti fertilizer, and give them more light. Thin growth is most often a problem in the winter months, when many cactiphiles bring their babies in for the winter and they receive very little light. Regular watering with full sun seems to help the best, or very little water, and plenty of sun for the winter. One drastic move one could make is to cauterize the growth point on the top of the cactus to force it to grow outwards, aswell as spawn more pups. but again, thats a last ditch effort.

Just thought I'de share my joy, but I just got a pedro cutting thats about a foot long, and about 10inches from rib to rib. It ways well over 10lbs, its from a very old cactus. And to add to that I only paid $8 bucks for it, plus 10.50 shipping.

thanks for the replies.
they live on my balcony and get full sun from dawn til mid afternoon.
temp is just above zero here these days, so i will bring them in.
i usually feed them guano, will seek out some cactus specific food.
if it topples only one fate will suit - the cooking pot.

nice shopping js420!

They only get sun from dawn to mid day? No wonder they are about to topple. Get yourself a couple of grow bulbs and put the Pedro under it. It will thank you for it.
