How are my grains looking? (rye, pics) UPDATED 27.10.08 - Wet spot bacteria
    #9030756 -

Hey,

I recently knocked up 2 quarts of rye grain, one with B+ LC and the other with Hawaiian MS syringe. This is my first time using grains so i dont know if these look healthy, or how much longer i need to wait before spawning.

Here are the pics. Has been about a week or 10 days since innoc and have been incubated in my TiT @ 75-80F. Shook once at 60%:
The Hawaiian (MS) :

The B+ (LC) :

The hawaiian started off looking really bad, but now is starting to look healthy. Some rhizo growth. Had a whiff of the jars too and they both smell like meaty mushrooms .

I plan to spawn these too some poo then case.

They look good. That B+ jar is ready to spawn. Wait for the Hawaiian jar to look like the B+ jar before spawning it.

Thanks, im spawning the B+ now to a big tray of cow poo, verm, coir and gypsum, layer by layer.

Is it fine to incubate in my TiT (of course with a foil or cling wrap cover)? Or do i need to incubate it in my FC with the humidity?

Im figuring it would be ok in the TiT as the cover would keep the tray humid, but what is the norm?

Looking good  . 10 days from start to finish using LC is really great too. I get fast times like this only when using GTG

update for contaminant ID:

The Hawaiian grain jar is colonised about 80% from the top down with healthy mycelium. The bottom inch or so is Bacillus or 'Wet Spot' bacteria. Learnt this only recently.

Thought id add that as it may be useful to people ID'ing contams.

The only other contam ive come across so far using grains is the 'Lipstick Mold' which i had never seen before until yesterday. Yukky looking stuff. I didnt take a photo.

This one looks a bit slimy. It's a problem my roommate has been dealing with since we decided to incubate our jar closet. We've come up with two conclusions. Either my roommate is not letting his seed dry enough before putting it into his jars, or the heat is building up humidity inside his jars and causing the slime to form.

All it seems to do is slow the mycelium growth. Still usable, but not suggested.

If you have bacteria in your jars, such as at the bottom of the pic above, it's not usable.

Bacteria comes from improper sterile technique, OR if you make the jars too wet where they can't colonize within a month, bacteria will begin to form naturally.  Proper moisture content from the start, room temperature(75F) colonization, and proper gas exchange will ensure colonization within 3 weeks, provided proper sterile inoculant and procedures are used.

Yeah that got chucked a while ago. The grains in the top section were still very usable though, in fact, in use now with out a hint of a problem. I did wait until the healthy looking grains were very thickly colonized. There was a clear line between where the myc ended and bacillus started, so i used the grains up to 1-2cm above the affected area and made a small tupperware casing with it, which is coming along nicely.

Since then i havent had any problems using grain. I have another quart of Hawaiian and 3 quarts of Argentinians colonising at the moment

edit: wait i did get lipstick on another q of hwns i knocked up, but i used a syringe i forgot to put away properly (oops). So i put that down to the syringe being left sitting around, as other jars in the same run turned out fine.

Thanks for the response RR
