Straw Water Uses?
    #753032 - 07/17/02 08:34 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

So, my cat boiled up some straw for spawning the other day, and afterward decided to jar and save the tea that was made from the water in the pot. He tells me that it's a good substitute for the water in a PF cake, and has heard it can be used to supplement a casing.

Anyhow, he's got a couple of questions:

Should the straw juice be diluted? It's REALLY dark, like guiness.

Can he use the straw water as a substitute for water when cooking up rye grain?

Does the straw water make a good nutrient base for a mycelial suspension?

Thanks!

Water/Rye vs. Straw Water/Rye *pics* [Re: ]
    #780464 - 07/27/02 02:25 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

Hey, just an update that I thought some of us might find interesting.

Kitty innoc?ed some quarts of rye - three with 1:1 rye/water, four with 1:1 rye/straw water. He?s using a multispore innoc of some B+ he had lying around and incubating at about 85F. It?s been about 6 days.

Results:

The jars on the left, containing straw water:

The jars on the right, containing just water and rye:

I think the results are speaking for themselves! There?s little tiny bits of growth on 3 out of 4 of the water jars, but all of the straw water jars are clearly more developed.

Take care!

Wouldn't just using straw instead of straw water be easier? (1:1:2 - rye/straw/water)

No... Straw is a not a spawning substrate it's a fruiting substrate (though I'm sure you COULD use it as a spawning/fruiting substrate) The straw water obviously adds nutrients to the rye that the mycelium seems to love...

GREAT POST!!

Faster IS better!!! ?New tek's every day! ?That's one of the reasons I love The Shroomery!!

In addition to Tripmeister's observation, the straw water is what was left over after my cat pasteurized the straw he's already using for spawning. He just sucked it up in a baster and squirted it into quart jars (of which he has many), then tossed it in the fridge until he was ready to use it. A little extra trouble for significant results.

The secondary advantage to this method is that when the rye is spawned onto straw, it SHOULD take the mycelium less time to acclimate to its new substrate. It's already been growing on the straw nutrients, after all.

If one is using straw as a spawning substrate anyway, this is a great way to get more bang for your buck.

Will post more pics as the jars progress.

That what im talking about.. Question:: When you say 1:1 is that by volume or ..? Like do you just put the seed in the jars and fill to the top with water? or fill up a seperate jar with water to the same level? Also if its the first one (which im thinking it is) do you let the water settle a little and then "top off"?

>>When you say 1:1 is that by volume or ..?<<

By volume, yeah. One cup of rye berries, one cup of the liquid of your choice (or about 200ml/200ml, if you like metric). Just dump both into a quart jar, swish around a little to mix the grain dust with the water, then screw the lid on (with hole and filter, of course) and PC.

Great post Fan! I have a huge mason jar full of pasteurized straw water and was just hoping that someone out there might be a step or two ahead of me in using it! I can tell your cats are responding nicely to straw water. Now my day tomorrow has meaning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My cat uses the regular lids that come with the jars. There's a 1/2" hole in the middle of that lid for air exchange. His filters come from Micron Magick Mycology Market, and work like a charm. He PC's his rye grain for an hour, then lets it cool in the cooker overnight. Before innoculating, he shakes the grain to distribute moisture evenly in the jar.

Check out Quart Jars for Retards. This is basically what he does, except that he cooks the rye in the jar. No pre-boiling.

Still only marginal growth on the water jars, but extremely aggressive progress on the straw water.

The water jars are finally starting to show some promising growth. Kitty decided to shake his straw water jars because he felt that waiting for the slower jars would be a waste.

Do you leave the lid off??? Seems like a good idea, it would give it massive air exchange.....

>>Do you leave the lid off???<<

Off of the incubator? Nah, my cat just takes it off to take pictures. As you can see, the incubator is sizable and isn't airtight. Besides, there isn't a lot of gas exchange necessary for the incubation stage - a certain concentration of CO2 is beneficial.

I tried this today. Not that I don't belive your results but figured we might as well see if your cat is on to something. So I took a total of ten quart jars 5 using distilled water and 5 using water off the pasturized straw. I inoculated all of them from a master spawn jar so it would be the same strain. So I will let you know whats going on and post some pics.

I have a litre of this really dark water left over from simmering rye.. do you reckon this could serve a similar purpose to straw water?

Interesting. Do you think that you might have stalled the straw water mycelium by introducing a new substrate for it to break down after it had already acclimated to the rye?

Here are my current results:

My cat will definitely going to be trying this again in future experiments. Perhaps this was a fluke - certainly could happen with a multispore innoc.

Thanks for providing the objective experiment. Can?t say I?m hoping that future results are like yours, though.
