BRF versus the infamous Grain/Rye slut
    #1037309 - 11/08/02 08:49 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Does grain/rye really make a significant difference from BRF? I'm only producing casings, not really doing bulk or anythign so is it worth the trouble?

thanks

-joe mamma

some people have great luck with
rye, me, it contamed like a mofo.

cakes crumbled and cased is about
as simple a casing tek as it gets.

and fairly idiot proof to boot.

Most cakes have around 1/4 of a cup of BRF compared to a rye or birdseed jars that has around cup of actual substrate(talking dry amount here). And since most simple casings consist of either, a) one crumbled or sliced cake b)a quart of birdseed/rye, than its just obvious that the grain will be better since their is just more food for the shrooms. Well if you think of like this than it seems the rye or birdseed would win since it has more substrate

if your just casing, rye does have a much greater ability to contaminate, as stated. Mainly because the inside of the kernals are uncolonised.

But as far as nutrition goes I think the rye/birdseed is better

Rye grain, millet, other similiar grains are excellent choices but the reason growers started using those in the first place was because grains break up and can be used to innocultae bulk substrate easily.

Take the next step and use grains but then take the final step and use the colonized grain to innoculate horse manure compost. This is the method used by commercial mushroom farmers for over 70 years!

It's hard to argue with that much experience. Compost colonized with grain has proven to be the ultimate substrate by professionals world-wide for decades.
