Gym season. But I'm lazy.

Ok, so I went out to see if there are any liberty caps fruiting already, with it being an early season and all that, but apparently it's still too warm around here for them to fruit. So I looked around a bit and shot some of the fungi I found. It appears to be the gym season here, but I didn't collect any. What's the use of collecting gyms if liberty caps will appear within a fortnight, eh? Anyway, for your enjoyment, here's the pics then, in chronological order:

Inocybe sp (?)


Piptoporus betulinus


Hebeloma incarnatulum, growing in a neat semi-circle


Black-spored panaeolus. This one was growing in one of the fields where I'd expected some libs already, but alas.


The bovine inhabitants of the field coming to greet me. A bunch of unruly youngsters, really.


Uprooted pine, apparently it had already been lying like this for a year or so


Gymnopilus sp., don't know which one. Growing from a pine stump.


Mycena somethingortheother


Nice maze fungus in a waterfall-like posture


More gyms; these look kinda good, but I'm no gym expert


More maze fungus, daedalea quercina


Reishi, g. lucidum if I'm not mistaken. This one was literally wafting clouds of sporedust; I could see the spores being carried by the breeze while preparing for these shots

On to the next field to see if some libs would perchance be fruiting there, but again no success. This nice little path leads to the field in question

And that was all of it, regarding the mushrooms. Apart from those, I also ran into some bugs, some of which I snapped a quick pic of.

Dragonfly on cow patty


Snails; I had never consciously seen a red one like this before. Well, not alive, at least.


Disappointed at not finding any libs, I decided to gather some sorrel for a salad (I also spotted some apples, which combined nicely with the sorrel and a honey-mustard dressing :thumbup:). Someone took its time on this leaf and was overcome by some fungus. That's what happens to lazy bastards. I better look out.

Beautiful pictures as usual. So many excellent photos. What camera/lense do you use to take the shots?

Do you get Mycena cyanorhiza where you live?

Those Piptoporus betulinus burst forth from those trunk are incrdible. They must exert such force to spilt the wood in that way.

Thanks, both of you. I use a Canon EOS 20d (which appears to be in the process of dying on me lately, but it may just suffer from some corrosion on the battery contacts). Lenses used for these shots were a Tamron 17-35 wideangle and a canon 70-200 f4/L with extension tubes for the close-ups.

Those birch fungi really shred the trees to pieces!

Do they attack living wood? They appear too.

You have a goos grasp of photography, I hope to get there someday. I need a real camera first though.

No, these only grow on dead wood, as far as I can tell.

Koraks Oh my goodness:D What amazing pics! the Hebeloma Incarnatulum formation is unreal... Is it possible that the last pic is of a bug being taken over by Cordycepts fungus? What country were those pics taken in???

Hi art, I considered the cordyceps option, but I think it's a more ordinary (less spectacular) fungus. However, I'm not an expert on molds, so I wouldn't know, really. These were taken in The Netherlands btw.

Does the Netherlands have much natural forest and bush? It's a pretty tiny country.

No, not at all. I'd even go so far as to state we have *no natural forest at all*. It's mostly pine woods planted to produce timber for use in the mines in the south and some 17th-18th century parks (where I live) that have been allowed to run wild...a bit. As to nature, this must be the most boring country on earth.

Oh, that's a shame to hear. Well, you certainly manage to capture plenty of beauty in your photos. At least mushrooms seem to love pine trees.
