Lawn clippings as a bulk-sub

I have a hand powered mower and it chops the grass and leaves it laying on the ground. This fall many mushrooms have sprouted in my yard but not in any of my neighbors. My theory here is that the dried lawn clippings are the reason since I'm the only obsessed environmentalist on the block who owns such a thing.

Has anyone tried this?

i doubt cubes would do very well on grass, but i've never tried it or heard of anybody trying it.
give it a shot and let us know how it goes?

I read somewhere that RR said Lawn clipping will work fine one dried I guess ya just dry then pasteurize and spawn

awesome it's like straw but I don't have to cut it outright. Only thing is now I have to collect lawn clippings.

I would only suggest this as an additive to a bulk substrate.
IME some organic plant material to boost the nitrogen in the substrate was the way to go.

you don't think using it in quantities of ~40-50% would be a good idea? I usually split subs half plant type sub half poo type sub.

If this is excessive how does around 25% sound? How much do you mean when you say additive?

There was a thread over on mycotopia where someone (I think his name was Golly) used the thick under brush of tall grass stalk in place of straw and it worked ok.

why not just use the lawn clippings as the start of a compost heap? then add all the other goodies to make a bomb ass compost. does your lawnmower not have the bag attachment to the back so it picks most of them up for you?

In the early 70's when I lived in the Dallas area, I used to drive my pickup to the rich neighborhoods in highland park to collect their grass clippings.  They have gardeners and golf course looking lawns, so the bags of clippings weighed 70 pounds or more, and they would stack them neatly by the curb.

I'd compost them for my garden.  This is when I first discovered mushrooms, and buried several active cow patties around the perimeter of the compost pile after one of my trips to east texas where they're everywhere.  Long story short, I forgot all about that experiment until fall when the rains hit, and I literally had hundreds, if not thousands of cubes pop all around the pile.  Been addicted to growing ever since.

I doubt they'd work as well uncomposted, but you can always try.  They're not like straw, which is hollow.

no like I said in the OP I have a hand powered lawn mower you know the sort of thing with a cylinder of blades propelled by the turning of the wheels to chop the grass against a surface on the bottom of the mower. It's the kinda device you'd have seen people in the 50s use but nobody uses anymore cause they are lazy.

I do have a household compost would that be good to use in a substrate? It mostly has shit like banana peals and apple cores and watermelon shells in it. I could throw the lawn clippings in it and add it to my sub but the material in my compost bin ranges from 3 months to 2 days old so would I have to do something about that you think?

Oh wait one thing too when I was throwing away excess and hollow WBS I threw it in there as well. Would this be a contanminant problem? It would sound like it would but given time to decompose would it?

My experience in composting lawn clipping is that they need to be mixed in with high carbon materials - straw/dried (yellow/brown) grass/twigs etc. Otherwise the grass becomes slimy and does not break down well - too much nitrogen - which keeps certain aerobic bacteria out I believe.

Again, this is just my experience composting it for lawn/garden use...
