Awhile ago I was reading and someone said they use grass clippings from their lawn for bulk spawn similar to hay. Can you just pasteurize it like hay and spawn a cake?

You can pasteurize lawn clippings just like hay. If you want to play safe, turn your grass clippings into hay by drying them on your lawn. But I must agree with Anno: better use straw.
