grass monotub revisited (once again)

A while a go I posted something re this monotub--the substrate is rotted--composted?--grass clumps and soaked (a month) and sterilized straw --50/50.The grass was obtained by scraping the underside of a mower deck and putting the resulting grass clods into a 5 gal bucket and adding water. I waited a month and the grass seemed to have turned into something that smelled and had the consistency of wet cow manure--wet but not fresh. Anyway, I sterilized straw and grass and put the mix in a tub and here are some pics that maybe tell the story.

Here is tub yesterday after 11 days of fruiting conditions:


Maybe what gave the tub a boost was that I started using an ultrasonic mister on it--just 15 mins at at time 4 or 5 times a day.

The harvest is not huge so far but who knows. Keep in mind that before I took the last pic I had harvested a small clump of muhrooms from the upper right edge of tub--you can see the hole.

cubes really will grow on almost anything organic. Looks like theres alot of metobolites being produced.

Maybe try pasturising it instead of sterilising which can leave it open to bacteria and moulds.


I recently grew a few cubes on newspaper. yeild was nothing to write home abot, but it did produce some nice sized and thick fruits.

IMO it was worth it for the size of fruits

The fruits are fat in this tub--but I have found that those little skinny guys that I get off halfpint jars--that have been fruited in the jar--have more life in them, if you know what I mean.

I've gotten so many mushrooms from a small tub of rotten grass and straw that I can afford to throw away the stems and trip on unopened caps.

Cervantes: I didn't delete the photos deliberately--I cleared them from my gallery to make room for more not realizing that deleting them from the gallery also deleted their presence from any posts in which they were embeded.

I mixed my outdoor patch with a pile of lawn clippings and newspaper.. the sub had flush twice in a mono before transplanting (hpoo) seems to be working great, and I am still picking them daily, for over a month now.  Might be more to lawn clippings than I originally thought, will have to try it again.

Here is the beginning of the third flush from my grass/straw monotub.
The sub was spawned--inoculated?--on the 20th of June. It was put into fruiting position on the 7th of July. First flush showed up the 20th of July.Not sure when the seconded appeared.
Grass is Great!
