A few quick grain questions

Well, after my friends cat failed at his first attempt with brf/verm jars, he now plans on doing grains (which he would have done in the first place, just he didn't have a pressure cooker)
hes planning on using parakete seed (he says it looked like it had more white millet then finch seed)
Anyway, he was wondering if gypsum was really important? (and, what it actually does...)
also, should he just boil the seeds first so they take in the correct amount of water and also expand to their hydrated size? (how long should he boil them, or should he PC them in this stage?)
And finally, he plans on using tyvek filter discs.... should he put the tyvek between the lid and the band or under both (and innoculate threw the tyvek)?
Thanks.

I suggest this: Seep seeds until they double in size (~170 F, ~30 minutes) Load 1 cup into each pint jar PC for 1 1/2 hours The seeds will expand in the PC to fill ~75% of the jar.
Gypsum is optional, I believe it helps the seeds from sticking together. Placement of the Tyvek doesn't matter, but if you innoc through it be sure to seal the hole with tape or glue. I hope this helps.

but if the seeds arent fully expanded before I load the jars, how will I have the correct amount of water (since if they expand more, they apparently need more excess water when I load them into the PC)

Get a bag of basic wild bird seed (primarily red & white millet) from Petco, or where ever.
Just leave husks & any crushed corn -- SF seeds in. They don't hurt squat.
Soak some overnight (12 up to to 36 hours) in a pot, tub or bucket.
Rinse well.
Drain well. I mean DRAIN WELL.
Load jars 3/4 full, add filter disk or material under lid.
Leave lids 1/2 -- 3/4 turn loose.
Cover outside of lids w/double coffee filters & rubber band down against jar. ( This keeps contams off the top of the jar).
PC @ 15 pounds 60 to 90 minutes.
Allow PC to cool somewhat.
Remove jars while still hot, tighten lid & shake -- to break any clumps.
Store jars in a cool dry place -- to cool to room temp.
Then innoc, or whatever.

but if he's using jars with a whole in the lid covered by tyvek... wont he be able to put the lids on tight before pressure cooking?
