ok well i think i just ruined 17 pint jars of birdseed! this time instead of adding bird seed then water to jar i boiled the grain well simmered for 45 mins before to remove and extra crap off the grains right then let drain for 20-30 mins .... well its been 4 days and no growth! and the birdseed inside is just a soggy mess?? i think im going back to add grain add water than pc instead of cooking grain in the first place !!! i think it added too much water!

Just soak over night, rinse well, drain well in collander & load 5/8 to 3/4 full. If the seed still appears too wet, nuke 5--6 jars at a time of a few minutes to steam some more moisture out. Simple as that. SixTango

He means use that method from now on... Your jars are toast, sorry.

Back in my early days, i had some very soggy substrates colonize pretty well. I don't nesicarily see growth after 4 days with multi spore innoc. unless you need the jars, i'd let them try. Are we talking no air at all?

The best tek that I have found is the one on the the forest floor. I have tried the simmering tek with the same results as you, all soggy and ended up with green mold. I even tried the tek that says to add your birdseed, then some water and pc, but the birdseed still never came out right. This is the one I have used everytime so far with no contams at all.
2/3 cup of birdseed for each pint jar. Put the 2/3 cup of birdseed in every pint jar that you are going to use. I can only do 5 at a time so I fill each jar up with 2/3 cup of birdseed. Oh yea, first rinse off the birdseed as much as you can before putting it into your jars. Anyway, after you put the birdseed in the jars, fill the jars up with water untill the birdseed is complety covered, I just fill the water to the top and stir around the birdseed when im done. Let this soak overnight. I let it go for about 24 hours. After that is done soaking, strain out the nasty water really good from your jars. Now you should have 2/3 cup of stinky ass birdseed left in your jars. Now all you do is add 10 cc's of water, I use regular water sucked up into a empty syringe and squirt 10 cc's in each pint jar. Then I put on my lids, rubber side up, that has 1 hole in the middle stuffed with polyfill and screw the band on as tight as it will will go. Next I cover with one piece of foil and pc for 1 hour at 15 psi. I use to stick the pc in the refridgerator after it was done pcing, but the last time I did it with the same jars I have been using, almost all my jars cracked. That was even with having a towel in the bottom of the pc on the little rack that it came in. I guess dropping the temp that quick a bunch of times finally cracked my jars. This method has worked great for me so far, I even tried it out with quart jars but just double the 2/3 cup of grain and instead of 10 cc's of water I added 15 cc's. So far those jars have been doing good to. Oh, I even did some half pint jars of birdseed like that but just cut the recipe in half. When I take my jars out the next day and shake them up before innaculating, they still look greasy in there like when I had screwed some jars up the first times, but after about a day in the incubator, the birdseed dries up and is at the right consistincy. Hope this helps, I know it works for me.

Yea when you stick them into your incubator, leave the lids really loose.

i just add 2/3 cups of birdseed to 1 pint rinse it for about 3 minutes with water to get the bird kote and grime off the birdseed, then add 1/3 cup of water and pc. it works every time.....just be sure to shake your jars really well.

LOL, I didnt even relize I did all that. I wrote that right when I woke up this morning so I couldnt think all straight yet.
"you fill the jars with water to the top of the jar? or to the top of the bird seed line"
You want cover the birdseed. I fill mine all the way to about a inch from the top, then let them soak.
