Hi, I just had a few quick questions. Please don't flame me for asking these, but I'm very new and I have no idea what people are talking about when they say this. What is a "CAKE"? I don't really understand what it is. Also, what do you rgrow the shrooms in? Thanks guys, I know you all will understand since you were all newbies at one time or another.

the cake is so called, probably due to the shape it retains based on the container you start with to sterilize the substrate, which is traditionally a mixture of brown rice flour and vermiculite. this is often called the pf technique, based on a process pioneered by psilocibe fanaticus.
there is still a web site under that name, check spelling

Well a cake is when you inoculate your Brown Rice Flour with your spores, then the mycelium(is like little baby shrooms getting ready to grow up)
it is white it will colonize the jar(fill up with the white mycelium) when the jars is fully colonized(meaning all the brf is completely white)
You take it remove the cover and turn it upside down and you should have an all white CAKE that falls out and this goes into your birthing chamber and will in s few days to a couple weeks give you mushrooms(happy birthday).

Best 2 newbie links on the web... read and learn...... you`ll be out of control with this rewarding hobby in NO time the "cake" is what the brown rice flour and vermiculite become when the mycelia overtakes it in the jar.... here`s the links

Psilocybe Cubensis is the species that you should be after. I would reccomend the Cambodia race of cubie's because they colonise very quickly and produce much better then many of the other races on cakes. Their potency has been labeled at somewhat weak for a cubie, but when eaten fresh, I have no complaints.

you should go for growing a strain of psilocybe cubensis wich is the most common and easiest mushroom to grow...there are many strains within this species that you can choose from..i think the thailand strains are really easy to work with..but its your choice..there are a lot of other strains out there that are really fast and abundant fruiters..good luck

take a look above. in the debate on cubie potency, there is no clear winner, so, if you are a newbie, then you are looking for successful results. improving potency comes with experiance.
b+ is a good choice, as are the others above.
yield has everything to do with method of cultivation and little to do with variety. underfed saint bernards may not produce as well as well fed poodles, same goes for mushrooms.
