another newB question
    #813804 - 08/12/02 10:07 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

first off, i want to say thanx to all of you who have helped me so far..... and a premature thanx for those to help me in the future. I am new to the growing field, and have many questions. eventually, i hope to help answer as well as ask. the shroomery is a wonderful thing and i am very greatfull for those who keep it going..... ok, enough mushy stuff....

when using a humidifier to keep up the humidity, is it really necessary to have the tubing and empty coke bottles as described in the growers guide? it seems like a pain in the ass..... i havent actually built my grow chamber yet, so any suggestions would be cool......

Hello!

well imho, as i already have written in this forum, dont follow the teks as a robot, but you have to think why is this or that necessary.

The mycelium needs a specific condition to think that the time is right to fruit. So the temp and humidity has to be right. So, it really doesnt matter if the cake is inside a bottle or not, as long as inside the terrarium the conditions are right.

Note that when you work with cakes, you need more humidity underneath them [casings are already made] so a layer of perlite or even a wet towel might do the trick.

My advice is to buy asap a temp/humidity gauge. You will find it absolutely necessary. As long as you read the right numbers on them, you feel safe and comfortable, no anxiety at all!!!

maybe you misunderstood my question..... in the tek, it says to conect via tubing 3-4 empty coke bottles together, in order to make the water particles smaller or something..... is this necessary?

The bottles are used as difusers to reduce excess humidity put out by an ultrasonic humidifier. The excess will form water droplets in the air which will in turn puddle on your cakes and cause aborts and mycelium pissing and prevent fruiting. That's why cool mist humidifiers are better for the terrarium... They don't need the output difused and as a bonus they provide air exchange. The downside is that you can't run them constantly because you'll actually decrease the humidity with too much air exchange.
