boletus edulis/us-new england
    #874448 - 09/10/02 09:51 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

last fall i found some isolated specimens of boletus edulis in a forest here in eastern long island. does anybody have more info on hunting for these here in new england, in particular when the season starts? i went back to the same location last week-end but found only tons of "suillus americanus" (i'm not sure spelling and/or id are correct): apparently its an edible boletus but it didn't seem very attractive to me. anyway, no bol edulis. i believe the season here starts later, but i would appreciate any info on this, particularly by local hunters.

I'm from Colorado, not New England, but the main season here for Boletus edulis is over already. Typically the largest flush here is in mid-August. Probably your best source of this kind of information would be one of the local mycological societies. You'll probably find lots of people there who have common interests and would be happy to help you find more boletes. Good Luck!

I'll add another comment, since you might not know the relevance of your other thread (about Amanitas). Amanita muscaria is often an indicator species for Boletus edulis. When I am hunting boletes, if I see some Amanitas I know it is a good place to stop and look around for boletes.

Incidentally, do you know how to tell the difference between Boletus edulis and Tylopilus felleus, a common but nasty tasting lookalike? If not (without looking it up now), then you should break out your book(s) and study it up so you can avoid collecting the Tylopilus and potentially ruining a meal (they will contaminate the entire dish they are cooked in).

hey Toxic, i really appreciate your suggestions, they are very valuable. in fact i was not aware of the amanita/boletus relation, and i will certainly look up the tylopilus. thank you. any other indicaters i should be looking for when hunting the king bolete?
