Found in mixed woodland.. but mainly beach.
Just want to check its not any other Boletus before cooking. Loads more from its location. I picked the most mature one for IDing.. Cap color is drak brown but not as brown as the picture shows! sorry bad pic!
No blue staining!
Spore print looks to be brown but not much has dropped yet!

It looks to me like there is slight bruising on the gills. If it is a king it's the oddest I've ever seen.

Looks more like a Leccinum species. Most Leccinum species are edible, however I can't reccomend eating any.

The stalk looks like it is indeed a Leccinum, though I'm unfamiliar with species having cap colors that dark; I've only found grayish to manila colored edible species thus far. The only warnings I've heard regarding this group is that the red or orange-capped species may cause stomach troubles.
My next guess would be that it is a Tylopilus of some sort, which likely means it'll be mildly to extremely bitter in flavor. If a Tylo, it'll probably have an odd, acrid odor whereas a Leccinum may have a sweeter, more-breadlike aroma (based on my experience).

I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be edible, but taste it for bitterness to be sure anyway, I'd say. Tylopilus sounds most likely to me. Would you venture a guess as to genus and/or species b0red5tiff?

idk the latin names, just that it grows around here and it's considered a good edible. the cap & stem is edible but take out the gills. its only good to eat when it's young, once it starts to get old it gets mushy and icky.

Leccinum scabrum...is possible, but the presence of beach would be odd. OP, were there any birch growing near the spot where you found this shroom?

Found under beach in grass kept short-ish by the sheep.
I believe its the Birch bolete
Quote:
(Leccinum scabrum) is an edible mushroom, deriving its common name from its old scientific name of Boletus scaber. It belongs to the family of boletes and occurs only in symbiosis (mycorrhiza) with birches. The birch bolete is widespread in Europe and grows from June to October.
Common names include rough-stemmed bolete, scaber stalk, or birch bolete
Quote:
Uses
The birch bolete is edible and is especially enjoyable pickled in brine or vinegar. It is used also in mixed mushroom dishes, fried or steamed. Experience shows that the extract of the birch bolete may be helpful in cases of stomach trouble.

I don't really have a clue but I think it is a Tylopilus also.
Tylopilus porphyrosporus
Tylopilus indecisus.
The dark brown cap should be an identifiable feature but nothing rings a bell.

Yeah...Tylopilus alboater might be a possibility...helps explain the dark coloration on the stems that give the impression of scabers.

The color was closer to
The picture is misleadingly because of the short exposure.

The association with beach pretty much rules out the possibility of leccinum scabrum due to the fact that that species is exclusively associated with birch.

There was silver birch at the edge of the wood. the shrooms where found between the two, but maybe closer to the birch than any other tree.. so I do agree on leccinum scabrum. After reading more and looking at many pics the color does match.. its just a bad pic.
