Possibloe Agaricus Species ID Check and/or Confirmation
    #3337979 - 11/09/04 05:51 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Well today, Borealis and i went out NW for a few hours with no luck for actives but we found what at first sight seemed to be some Lepiota mushrooms as seen in the next image below:

Then a park employee came by and told us we were not to suppose to be where we were. I told him I was taking pictures of mushrooms and he said finish up. This is not opened to the public.

Then after they drove away, Borealis and I decided to check the shrooms.

I took two more pictures and then a couple of middle-aged humans (as if there were any other kinds of middled aged people who weren't humans) came by on twin bicycles, anti-accident colored bright yellow and red jackets and bike helmets and said, "Lepiotas."

I said "no. They look like some kinda Agaricus species."

Then the husband stated that, "They look like Leipotas."

The I cracked the shroom open in Borealis' hand and saw the pink gill structure. Even the annulus was gigantic on the thick stalked stipe of the shroom.

Again I said, "no, they are not Lepiotas. But I think they are Agaricus."

The man then turned to his wife and said maybe A. capestris."

I thought doubtful since the caps were bigger than any campestris i had ever seen in a market.

So here is the other image of the pink gills which I know will eventually darken to a brown,

So here is the second image of this mushroom.

So what I am asking is for some kinda cobnfirmation on the genera and species of this shroom.

mj

I see those around quite a bit, I call them Agaricus praeclaresquamosus.

was the stem by any chance curved near the base?
If so, cannot remember the scientific name but it appears to be "flat top" agaricus. Not edible. Just found one of those myself and took it home to ID it.

edit: a quick google search revealed the scientific name as someone stated above: Agaricus praeclaresquamosus

Yeah MJ I am knee deep in these mushrooms in my neigborhood right now. I noticed the Gills at black/brownish - but some of the caps that are alreay open have lighter gills, resembling the one in your last pic.

Are these the common supermarket mushroom?

Those are definitely Agaricus, although I wouldn't even make a guess on subgenus without more info like bruising reactions and odor. There are Lepiota species that have that general cap appearance, but the pink gills and appearance of the partial veil should have given it away.

As for being Agaricus campestris, those would be pretty robust specimens. The A. campestris I find tend to be among the smaller Agaricus.

There is certainly a resemblance to A. preclaresquamosus, but there are too many Agaricus species that resemble each other like that to try to make a guess from the photos.

Great photos (as usual), BTW.

Happy mushrooming!
