Question on WBSF PF Tek

A quick question that I cant seem to find.

I made WBS Flour from Pennington and i sifted all the whole pieces to get a fine flour(i dont have a PC). I then mixed a cup of it with 3.5cups of verm and filled 1/2 pint jars. Now i know that WBS and grains in general need more gas exchange. Will the WBS now flour still need the extra gas exchange that whole grains need? Thanks.

It works just like BRF. You used more verm than you needed. RR's PF tek calls for a ratio of 1:1:2 but I don't know if it will make any difference.

I'm pretty sure that birdseed need to be PC'd because it s, by nature, filthy and covered with endospores and the like. using "wbs flour" isn't going to change this.

maybe i'm wrong, if you could kindly point me to something that says different, please do.

Which IS wild bird seed.  It needs to be pressure cooked like any grain.  Only brown rice flour can be boiled.

of course it does. sterility has nothing to do with nutrients, its about making sure it's the only thing thats growing in your medium. there is no way you sterililzed that bird seed in a microwave. if you had 100% success rate you just hit the mycological lottery.

why does the microwave not work? Seems like a few 5 minute cooks with cool downs b/w and not opening the door b/w cooks would work, but i dont really know  :2cents:

Also...when you PC WBSF cakes...does the substrate smell like burnt grain when if first comes out...and look a very slight darker shade than when it went in?:confused:

it just doesnt. it doesnt get hot enough or last long enough to actually sterilize.

your basically playing an odds game: "will the mycelium germinate and colonize before something else does?"

I was under the impression that steam had a tough time penetrating the hulls of the seeds and when floured easily sterilized.  Theres a lot of information on this forum that suggests that. Thanks for the clarification.

also, the post you responded to had nothing to do with whether or not you had been successful. that was my response to someone else, in regards to whether seed hulls prevented the correct temperatures from being reached.

using capslock and getting upset won't change the nature of mycology.

research and learn, or go home.

well i have read many threads suggesting that steaming wbs does work for some, but def not on a consistent basis. I am not even going to waist my time or wbs just to contam, i need to get me a cheap PC.
