Ok, I have successfully used the cake method for more than 2 year.. My yields have been decent, and have had littlle problems... I think I am ready to use rye grain and a bulk substrate... What suggestions do you guys have for me?? I would like to generate a huge yield? What is the best substrate to start with? Worm casings, cow manure???

I have had the most impressive results casing straight birdseed. I use a high millet content seed and it kicks ass.

I don't think strain matters that much. I'm not saying there are no differences in strains, just don't worry too much about it. They'll all give you what you're looking for...

If you`ve succeeded with grains, I`d suggest moving straight to bulk substrates. In my opinion it`s far superior to any other method and easier. But that`s my opinion, use it , don`t use it.
I`ve had the best results with a 60/40 straw/poo combo, with a layer of colonised poo on the surface to act as a contamination barrier.

Isn't that the truth! I've always held firm in my beliefs that there's more than one way to skin a cat!

Edit: To answer your question Thrillz, you can certainly use a straight verm layer. I find straight verm layers work well but can be difficult to work with due to the amigbuity when trying to determine moisture content. If you can, pick up a bag of Jiffy Mix (50/50+) for a great casing with no real mixing.

I personally prefer roadkill's poo method over straight rye. I don't use mittet though, so i dunno how well it works. Straw is working really well to give large fruits. You need a deep tray though.

Thanks Shaw!
I have done straight grains and I don't like them much.
Using PF cakes or Rye Grain or birdseed to spawn horse poo has given me much larger and better fruits!
I personally like Rye Grain the best to use as a substrate.

In reply to:
Ok, I have successfully used the cake method for more than 2 year..
In that case I think the next logical step would be to use some cakes to create a casing. I recommend using 50/50+. If you have luck with that then try to spawn some bulk substrate with some cakes. I had good luck doing this with worm poo/straw. Then move onto grain.
