Those who have tried with success or not, please help
    #2290769 - 02/01/04 12:23 AM (13 years, 30 days ago)

 Two easy questions....hopefully:

1.  Can I get my PF-jars ready with substrate during the night, and then pressure cook them in the morning when I wake up? or is this not good?  In other words, do I have to pressure cook right away?

2.  If YOU use two piece mason jar lids, is there really a difference to have the rubber seal up?  I read that its ok to PC with rubber seal DOWN, but I would much rather read from other people that this is not a worry, before I waste time and materials.  The reason I dont want the rubber UP, is because I practiced on one lid(with seal facing UP), and it doesnt seem to have a good seal/not closing correctly.

please help, its my first grow.  go easy on me, hehe. Thanks!

Once the substrate is mixed, you have about six hours before it starts to ferment and is unusable... you can stretch that by putting the substrate in the refrigerator as soon as its mixed, but not by much. I've seen good results from substrate that sat in the fridge overnight.

I swear by the method of putting the lids on upside down... right side up, the rubber melts and tears when you open the jars, making the lids less usable for the second time around...

wow....that was fast!  Just what I needed.  hehe
Thanks a lot Mike! You're the man! Looks like I will be waiting.  I may do a couple of jars tonight and set them in the fridge, and the rest in the morning.  Do a comparison, and see what happens in a month or so.  Thanks again!

yes this is fine, you have nothing to worry about, jars won't ferment or become useless after 6 hours. IMO a clean counter is probably better than a dirty fridge.

Doesn't really matter. Even in a PC for 2 hrs I have never seen the rubber from a jar lid melt. I like to use a big hole with a polyfill or tyvec filter. and another small hole covered in tape for innoculation. I punch these holes with a nail, from the top (no rubber) through the bottom (with the rubber). Thus the lid is on right side up with two holes whose exits face down. The reasons I could see for flipping the lids is: 1 it's easier to open them, 2 it keeps them from being completely sealed (allowing gas xchange during colonization and allowing steam to penetrate into the jars during PCing). The polyfill/tyvec accomplishes these also.

1. Yes this is fine.

2. I never put the lids on upside down. Never had a problem with it.

oh awesome...I planned on using polyfill originally, I got a 8 ounce bag of it..should last me a LONG time! Woohooooooo

I guess I will be doing a mix with lids on with seal down and up. See what happens. Anyone else want to fill me in???
Thanks SM!! good info.
Oh I forgot. I have some Foil Tape that I purchased at Home DePot a while ago(still in wrapper). Can I use foil tape instead of masking or duct tape? on the label it says its for use on UL listed fiberglass air ducts. its made by Tyco Adhesives. can I use it? or should I be safe and go with masking tape? Thanks again

"eh, tape is tape man. sticky on one side, not on the other."

thats what I figured. but I read somewhere that some tape will fall off due to the moisture. dont mind me, just asking simple minded newbie questions. Heh.

LOL! I am a newbie at this. If someone talks like they know what they are talking about, I will most likely abide. but I definetly wanted to get more than one opinion. Much appreciated!

the reason it is recommended that you flip the lid upside down (rubber side up) is because sometimes a vacuum forms, even with the holes drilled because of the foil layer. if that happens, when you pierce the foil with a syringe, the vacuum sucks all the spore solution into that one hole. it doesnt happen often, but when it does, you will start taking pf's advice and start flipping your lids.

I would recommend masking tape over duct tape if pcing......I've had duct tape shrivel up after pcing.....masking always works perfect
