I always thought the PF method sucked. It works, better believe that, but it is a pain in the ass. Mix this, grind that, punch here, etc. It takes more time to prepare twelve jars 1/2 pint, then to prepare 36 quarts if you use the proper methods. That was what got me looking for the "perfect" formula lomng ago, it led to the birdseed and other grain mixes. Still my favorite, for price and performance, yield, potency. Little or no contamination with a one hole FMF tape seal. I have always searched for one single thing, cheap, that you could use. Not to grow PF cake style either.
Try Hartz Mountain Rabbit Food. It is cheap, it has all kinds of the best nutrients for mushrooms, it has the same proteins and a lot of the same or similar ingredients to digested cow manure. The Cubesis that fruit off it are extremely potent. My friends are having trouble getting the right water mix.
With seed and grain I personally learned a long time ago that soaking over night not only results in the perfect water ratio, but makes the substrate pasturize or sterilize if you want to call it that much better. The Rabbit food looks almost exactly like manure when cooked and ready to inoculate. My friends say it is a very fine line between mush and pellets. They say you have to have a little more then what it take to make all the pellets fall apart. Then a slight touch over that is to much. It is a one stop food except for the problem of moisture if you want to do the PF cake method.PF knows that the majority of the moisture required for fruiting comes from the substrate, due to studying others research. he then figured a way to get it to the public ijn less then lab conditions. I also think he thought of the dry vermiculite layer, but with four holes you have to do something drastic because of potential contamination. The needle touching the material on the inside is not a good practice either. Then when the cakes are done colonizing, the humidity is just the icing that makes the cake.
Well, I hate using vermiculite. I feel everything used should serve as a nutrient so lets go with Corn Cob litter again. It fruits fine with a colonized Rabbit food misture if you put a damp layer of cron cob litter in the tray bottoms, and damper then usual normalk casing on top. The Corn cob can be added to the mix if you want to do PF cakes. That may be good for a good time once or twice a year (PF cake growing), but if you needed to have a party.
If there is anyone else who is looking for a single ingredient put in a jar, then simply add water and use shipping tape to tape on a upside down lid with single whole in center. Then screw on the ring till snug then back off till almost loose. Cover the hole with masking tape after inoculating with spore solution around the side of the jar and a cc down the center.
Try the Rabbit food. With a little experimenting on the water ratio (friends who are trying it are having trouble getting the water ratio correct, but with a few more people working on it, and perhaps thinking of one other ingredient that is easy cheap and helps.......
For what it is worth. My friend gave me some of his successes, and they were
*awesome* for any Cubensis and they were a poor strain. The ones on something like SF-1 or Ecuadorian...well.... Watch out!..Mr.G
P.S.
If you don't want to try this due to a wasted syringe (we have all been on a tight one before) email me at bullmac@yahoo.com. I will help out the ones I can. Write me what you might work best, and the best success you have had so far with any method, what method you think is best in other word,s and i will pick a few people and send them syringes. It will be a matter of what I can afford time and health wise, i was in two pretty serous car accidents back to back. It will be the SF-1 strain the same avalible at fmfarms.com
I'm sure it will be available at other vendors soon as well. It is well worth the buzz it is starting to create. It does seem to throw a lot of albinos. No special processes necessary. The TC does the same, but not as many. We also have a G-1 clone of a pure white Cubensis found in the wild.

I just might have to go buy a bag and give it a whirl.
I'll let you know what i come up with.
No need to send me spores.....I have many.
Unless you want to unleash a kick ass print my way....lolz
Thanks for the info on the Hartz Mountain Rabbit Food.
