Alternative Substrates

I've got some jars spawning and I'm ready to take the next step. I'm trying to grow the mushrooms in bag culture. Anyway the recipe calls for wheat straw and and a couple cups of brown rice flour to be cooked in a pillow case at 65 celsius for about 20 minutes. Now the brown rice flour isn't hard to get but for some reason all the pet stores in my area have switched from nesting straw (wheat) to some shredded wood chips. So I was wondering if it is possible to substitute alfalfa hay (food for rabbits) instead. Or what other substrates could I use instead for a bag culture. Any and all help would be much appreciated.

I suspect alfalfa or any other green material would rot. You can buy hay in small bales from Shroom Mart or any other store that sells art and craft supplies. Hay is used for fall decorations. Feed stores are the best sources for hay.

Yes, it did rot, and what a smell! I did another batch, and in the absence of wheat straw I just cultivated them directly fro mthe rye. Since I'm only growing for personal use I got enough.
