You could try WBS (wild bird seed) or grass seed (not hemp seed, _regular_ grass seed). I'm still (and always) looking for alternative substrates, gonna go shopping in my local healthstore today and see if I find something promising. If I find something interesting I'll let you know.

Wild Bird Seed works great. It's really cheap and easy to find. Just check out 6t's wbs tek.

Just inoculated one jar of lentils, one jar of millet and one jar of barley. As of yet, the lentils look most promising.

WBS is proven technology though...

Most grains you need to simmer it or let it sit for 12 hours. So the grains can absorb the water.

i know theres work, i just find it pratical to get my damn 20 qt pasta pot and and cook up this much popcorn, then strain it in 2-3 colanders and let set, this is trying to be done in short periods of time and i hate washing big ass pots that dont fit in my sink, bad enuff the pcer is kinda bitch to clean, so no other grain has the same easy ass properties like rye? is this right. everything else has to be simmered and rinsed?

You don't have to rinse popcorn BTW. Just soak, simmer, drain and load into the jars. I have a big pasta cooker with a built in strainer that makes this work very well. Popcorn is a lot more foolproof if you follow the tek compared to rye, because of rye berries widely different initial moisture content.

My town doesn't have a decent health food store of any kind. I bought a 25 lb bag of organic rye from bobs red mill online, for $23 with shipping.
