Tricks of the Popcorn Trade
    #3614007 - 01/11/05 07:52 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hey folks,
AFOAF has been using popcorn to grow B+ and Koh Samoi with mixed results. Once he spawns it to straw the results are great, but he is having problems getting growth started. He has followed all instructions properly, but growth either doesn't start at all or contaminates. Any secrets out there for initiating growth and avoiding contams (looks like black pin mold probably)? Any help, hints, general feedback would be great.
Thanks

. what popcorn
. how/long do you sterilize it
. do you soak, how long
. how do you inoculate, how much, how big are the jars
. air exchange to the jars? tyvek, polyfill?

etc etc

No prob, guess I have to be helpful to be helped   He soaked for 24, boiled for an hour, drained for a half, then pc'd for 70 minutes.  The 1 litre jars were inoculated by syringe, about a quarter cc per hole, roughly 1 cc per jar.  Holes were polyfilled and then stored at 24 degrees constant.  I believe he usues yellow corn, which could be the problem as I see a few writeup using white.  Any more info that is needed please let me know, it would be nice to figure out what is going wrong ASAP.  Thanks again......

Ok,
- soak ok
- dont boil but SIMMER instead
- PC 90 minutes id suggest (more or less standard for grains) to kill any contams inside.
- 1 CC is enough for a PF cake, but for a liter it is not that much. It should work with 1CC, though colonisation will take longer.
Do you shake the jar after inoculating?
- yellow corn is ok, use eco style or organic corn, without additives and without poison used on the acres.
- 24 degrees, again is ok but colonisation will take longer. 28-30C is advised.

You say growth dont start, after how long is that?

Definately helpful hints, thanks....he still actually has a couple jars in his closet. They were knocked up over a month ago, not even contams. He was just curious if the prob was contams so he let them grow, but nothing, not even the black pin mold like in the other jars. He did have the jars covered with tinfoil for the first week or so before taking it off and polyfilling the holes. How sensitive are spores to lack of air exchange initially? This could be the problem maybe.
Thanks for your continued help, everyone is great!

"How sensitive are spores to lack of air exchange initially? " IMHO not so sensitive. After a week or so myc can slow down when there is no gas exchange.

I am simmering a pot of popcorn right now. I've had good results with rye previously and am interested to see how the popcorn compares as it is cheaper and more readily available around here. The teks & posts i've read about each are rather similar.

Plain and simple(in my opinion), popcorn is not good for growing but is ideal for spawning.

How so? Less than stellar flushes? Higher contams? Slow growth? Please share...

Small fruits, slow growth...it really doesn't have the nutrients for bigger fruits and second and third flushes are nearly non existent. This has been my experience. It worls great for spawning to straw or poop though

Ive heard from growers who dont soak and simmer but just PC the popcorn twice. With good results.

My buddy is spawning to straw, but wothout adequate jars it doesn't exactly work too well. The straw spawn is growing well, but as far a sthe jars go it has been less than successful. Any other hints? Do Koh Samoi even grow on popcorn? None of those jars did anything, just wondering if anyone else has tried....

I assume you shake the syringe before injecting and flame sterilize the needle then wipe it down with alcohol and swab the spot your injecting with alcohol before injecting like you should be? Then shaking the jars after injecting and repeating the process for each jar? All cubies should germinate and colonize popcorn but they may not produce fruits the best. If using to spawn that shouldnt be a problem though and you just need to work on being more sterile when you inoculate.

By the by, 1cc should be more then enough for anywhere up to 2-3 quarts of substrate.

With a little supplementation, popcorn can work very well. Without additional nutrients, the results are less than spectacular, and are generally limited to only a single well producing flush. With a little work, popcorn can be "helped along" to produce nice flushes of meaty mushrooms...

ATWAR what is that wire mesh, where did you get it, and is it the only thing holding up your mushrooms?

I'm unsure but from the picture it looks like screen or chicken wire from any hardware store stretched across a PVC frame and then attached with something like twist ties along the sides. I'm working on building a shelf like I discribed anyway and it looks like that. Probably is the only thing holding up her mushrooms...

yeah, i am with scatmanrav on this. what suppliments? the cat uses popcorn exclusively for now (no real need to go bulk. . .yet). what are you using to supliment the popcorn? tell us, you know you want to.

The actual methods and ingredients are classified at this time. Once I do comparisons and BE calculations, I will write up and post a TEK. I will tell you however, this contains no dung or straw... As of right now, I am attempting to see how it will perform with other species (edibles). You can expect to hear more about this in the future...

The wire mesh is Hardware Cloth, available in the gardening section of large hardware stores (lowes, home depot). It indeed has been fit to a PVC frame, and attached by zip-ties. There are 2 cross braces of PVC for each shelf. That combined with the wire mesh is the only thing holding up my mushrooms...
