The last Stamets book, "Growing Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms" has a section on growing mushrooms on alternative substrates and sugarcane baggase is mentioned. I would assume that this is the same thing that you are talking about Maverick? Anyway, just in the way of a suggestion, I would think you could pasterize this sugarcane waste and mix it with pasteurized or sterilized farm animal dung and make a fine substrate. Just like you would mix pasteurized straw with dung to make a growing substrate. Just a thought.

Yes I looked through some other references it is called as bagasse.
I think I'll try it, there is a relatively high sugar content in this bagasse.
Wonder how that would affect the growth.
Anyways, I wont know until I try it out..
Thanx & Peace,

After reading numerous post concering sugars in different substances (I.E. using honey, sugar cane....so on and so forth.) I have wondered about adding straight sugar to a PF sustrate???

There's been several discussions here about sugar vs. glucose vs. malt extract. YOu can do a search for them, but the discussion pretty much ended with an explanation of why malt extract is the best additive and why you might have problems with the others.
On another note, I would try innoculating straight pasteurized cane baggase without the dung first, preferably from a cake or some whole grain spawn, rather than screwing with dung, which is going to smell to high hell when you pasteurize it, as well as being full of all sorts of contaminants and being generally not fun to work with.

Well,
I think I'm going to try this and see how it goes, I'll keep you people posted, we'll see what happens !
Dung is something i am not going to use, my wife will probably throw a fit or something if I walk in with a bag of cow or hrose shit.
Bagasse is something I am willing to experiment with..
Till the time I get my hands on bagasse, and innoculate the thing...
I'll keep you posted.
Peace,
