veda_sticks said: You should be. Your colinising nuitritious substrate which is not only good for mushroom mycelium but many many other contaminants. Coffee filters will alow contaminants to freely get into your substrate. Also coffee filters will allow alot of air in and out which could dry out your substrate.
Koh samia is not more contam resistant. Thats just vendor blurb. If contamination gets in, it will grow.
Your substrate could well have dried out, it could also be colinised by something other than mushroom mycelium.
i see where you're going - so in the future only use bags that have like HEPA filters or something

okay, so this is my "drunkard Ivy League tech." for when someone has a bag that's dried out. Since the filters on mycobags don't really solidify sterility, there isn't really a problem with injecting sterile water into the bag to rehydrate. When you have these large "balls" forming on the surface it's a sign of a poorly hydrated mycobag. Do your best to smush up and spread the balls within the substrate, and then rehydrate the bag using a sterile syringe and water via the self-healing gum. Mix it all up once more, and store in a warm and dark environment. Now for me right now, it seems that even though I've rehydrated with about 50cc's of water, the more finer pieces of vermiculite in the bottom of the bag are almost like DUST - they want to go straight to the bottom of the bag, because the popcorn and verm just don't mix, and that's how it settles. For some reason I can't get it properly hydrated. Let me ask you this - is there such thing as too much water to rehydrate? I'm thinking that as long as I don't come close to having really soggy substrate or standing water, you should be okay.

Yes, you can rehydrate too much. Just add water equal to roughly 5-10% of the volume of the substrate and wait a few hours to see how it soaks it up, then add a bit more if it doesn't look too wet (be clean and flame your needle before and after capping for storage, reswabbing with alcohol, etc). The problem is it would presumably be pretty awkward for you to squeeze it and allow it to drain to judge for good moisture content.
Proper field capacity is determined by squeezing your substrate (usually before pasteurization and spawning) and judging how wet it is by how much moisture trickles out of your hand. A trickle should come out with a hard squeeze, a few drops with a lesser squeeze.
Just remember that too dry is better than too wet, so if in doubt, wait it out.
