Port mapping and port forwarding are typically the same thing.

well that's what i thought but isn't port mapping done through a seperate program?

if not, is it impossible to open a port using windows with  a shitty modem that doesn't let me open ports?

Do you mean router, because you don't open ports in a modem?

Look up your router here.

And you might get lucky with an easy guide.

Although "modem" typically refers to a specific type of hardware device, the acronym itself is "modulator/demodulator" which describes pretty much all communication devices.  There are "cable modems" and "dsl modems" both of which are layer-3 routers, thus both of which need to manage IP port numbers.

You may just need to allow the program through your firewall. Are you on a network or is the computer the only computer hooked up to the internet?

Assuming you use windows firewall, get to the windows firewall settings tab, go to exceptions, add port, and add the port number.  If the firewall is on the router, then type into your internets adress bar 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 (some different numbers for the last digit (1-255), depending on the router, but these are the most common. look it up).  The default name/pass should be root///admin.  Get into the exceptions and add your port range (single number in this case).  Make sure you do this for both UDP and TCP.  There's no reason to find some advanced guide on this

yes i have already allowed it through windows firewall, and yes i already know how to forward ports through router settings, but, my fuckin Huawei E960 wireless gateway has no option for allowing ports to be opened. this is my problem.

Does it have a command line?

Or an option to just turn router-based firewalling off, if that fails?

Well, I know what you can do if everything else fails (including calling up your isp, this is the sort of thing that you pay for).  If you buy a cheap router, like a linksys, then you can place the modem in bridge mode, and run the new router as your gateway.  That way you can play with all the ports you like.

Sucks.  It doesn't allow port mapping/forwarding.  Bridging, as described above, should work, assuming your carrier isn't using NAT.

yeah no shit. if i had of known it was going to be so shit, i wouldn't have signed up for a 24 month contract.

i'll have to call up and find out if optus is using NAT, and if not i might look at bridging.
