If you like playing games over the internet, I would advise against that.
My friend had one, caused lots of problems.

Wireless routers can be reliable if you get a name brand and set it up correctly. I would stick with Netgear or Linksys, they have easy to follow directions, full features, and reliable support. Remember that wireless a,b,g work on a horizontal plane, so it's best that your router is at desk level on the same floor of your house as your favorite PC usually is. 802.11g is downward compatible also so you can have an A or B NIC in either PC and it will work.
Good luck

Netgear, D-Link, and Linksys are all good routers. There are a lot of shitty ones as well, but with those three you're going to get something pretty reliable.

Ah yeah D-Link is good too, forgot to mention that. Don't forget to set a passkey on your router when you get it because people love to hijack bandwidth. It happened to everyone I know that never set their passes.

hehe, yeah, I used to do tech support for Verizon, and we were supposed to help people setup routers, but only so far as they worked, no security or anything. If they asked about it, we were supposed to refer them to the OEM.
I wouldn't be suprised to learn that more than 50% of people with wireless routers are running unencrypted, unsecure networks with the default passwords for their routers. If you live in a populated area, it would be pretty easy to get free internet.

I just bought a Speedtouch 580 for my parents. Haven't tried it out yet but I've had a Speedtouch 510 (wired router) almost constantly on for a couple of years now and I've never had a single problem with it.
-------------------- The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame". In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience. And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him. "Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

Haha yeah I had 802.11b on my pocketPC. I could turn on the network autodetect and walk around Seattle, and there were a minimum of 3 useable networks from any residential part of the city. A lot of times a wireless router could be totally jacked, hackers will change your password and router access IP so that you don't have access to your own router, lol.

Check the advert from your local bestbuy or circuit city and they'll probably have a rebate offer on an 802.11g. It could be as low as 20 bucks. Get one of the 3 brands we mentioned. The setup will be self-explanitory once you've got the directions and setup program in front of you. Take the things Phluck and I mentioned under advisement when you're setting it up for your mom. Anything else you need to know? -BP

I think the implication there was that wireless is occasionally a little sketchy, so if you're trying to get the best bandwidth and latency possible, you're best off being hardwired.
Some games may require you to forward some ports on the router as well.

Go with the G. One of the cheaper G routers should be fine for at home.

my implication was wireless is very reliable nowadays, sure a hardwire will be the best because there's no chance of interference or anything but wireless works fine 99.99% of the time so it's not really a reason to rule out wireless for playing games. we had 4 people using the wireless here probably all d/ling shit and playing games at the same time and i never had a problem with lag or anything.
netgear is a breeze to hook up, i got the usb deal and just pluged it into my computer and it worked right away didn't even have to install the disk or anything but i did anyway just so it would be more reliable.

my brother has a linksys network at his house but they dont seem to care about password protecting it or any thing there is a option to use some sort of verisign authentication with either a smart card or a certifficate what ever that means and there is a few options for the network authentication that is just set in open and auto detect

One good way to secure it is to change the login for the router then restrict access to everyone except the designated MAC addresses of the PCs in your house... As for connection access passwords, the one you want to set is (I think) called the WEP Key.

Wow I hadn't heard that. I usually install Lynksys for my clients' networks but at home my network is half netgear. I assumed D-Link was as good because their other products (NIC's and such) never have me trouble.

i have tons of problems with it. the DMZ isn't really unresitricted, the built in firewall shit blocks half of my downloading shit, and best of all, after X number of days the password/login for the router page resets.
crap...
i saw the linksys 4 out + wireless for 39.99 at radio shack this morning.... get that one.

The password reset is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. It has port forwarding doesn't it? Usually that's the only way to get P2P programs and the like to work through a router at decent speeds.
Yeah that sounds like a good deal on the lynksys but he said he found a netgear for 70 with 40 dollar rebate which is just as good.

i recommend linksys... not only are they the best, but they have the best linux support as well.
but i'd be careful using wireless if you do anything requiring security (for example, purchasing things with your credit card). a wireless network is much much much easier to infiltrate than a non-wireless one. but then again, the prospect of surfing the net while sitting on the toliet makes up for any concerns of security
