Any one crafted a bow before?

So I am interested in making a bow with one of the beech saplings I jave in my woods. Does anyone have any experience in carving bows? Is there a market for a wellImade hand crafted bow?

To make the staff, I know you need to fashion it by splitting it with wedges.  You can't cut it, since you don't want to sever any of the grain.  After that, you just shape it's circumference how you like, and string it.  Viola, a bow!

yes! there definitely is a market for handmade bows, they can be quite expensive. there are two excellent books you should read, the bows and arrows of native americans, and making indian bows and arrows............the old way.

you can find them both at b&k, or amazon.com, a definite must read if you want to tiller your own bow.

i have.

you need to find a suitable piece of wood with as little knots as possible.

then you split it down the middle one or more times until you have the right size piece.

then you need to "til" the bow aka. carve it

what you want to do is follow the grain when you carve. you dont want to just cut it straight or it will have weak spots and it will break.

a well made "stickbow" shoul look gnarly and uneaven.

go to google and search "stickbow" or "stickbow how to" etc.


another thing that will make your bow really snap is if you make some glue out of a hide (boil it)  then lay down layers of animal sinew on the back (part that faces away from you)

search for paleoplanet message board.

i have made a few bows my self but it's far too hard to explain. in the paleoplanet forums there are some great tutorials that may help you.

few points. get the stave dry before stringing so it wont take much set. follow the grain as much as possible and make a 'D' section bow, much easier than flatbows.

my first bow was a Ipe english bow, 'D' section, easily 40 pounds at a 27 inches pull. still works pretty well.

Osage Orange, aka Hedge (like in hedge apples) is a more suitable wood than beech

i havent yet, but i have a book on native american bow crafting.  one of these days ill get around to it.
